For my friends and me, eating out isn’t a once-in-a-while splurge. We’re the type who plan our hangouts around food, hopping from one restaurant to the next just to see what’s new.
Some nights, we’re passing small plates around the table. Other times, we’re tackling towering burgers together.
Over the years, we’ve visited more Portland restaurants than we can count. Along the way, we managed to compile a list of restaurants that truly surprised us.
Instead of keeping that list to ourselves (tempting as that is), we’re passing the list along so you can dig in too. Here are the best restaurants in Portland that made food coma worth it!

Dan & Louis Oyster Bar is a historic Portland restaurant with over a century of seafood tradition. Its roots trace back to 1907, when Louis C. Wachsmuth began serving fresh oysters and seafood in the heart of the city.
The restaurant is renowned for its commitment to quality, offering oysters, shrimp, lobsters, and a variety of fish sourced with care. The attention to fresh, locally harvested seafood sets it apart from many modern dining options.
Family ownership has remained a cornerstone of the business, with four generations of the Wachsmuth family continuing Louis’ legacy. This multigenerational approach ensures that recipes, techniques, and traditions are preserved with authenticity.
The dining spaces are uniquely designed, featuring the iconic “Main” room with a sailing ship interior and the “Galley” kitchen, where guests can watch chefs at work. These thoughtfully crafted spaces enhance the overall dining experience and celebrate the restaurant’s maritime heritage.
Dan & Louis Oyster Bar also embraces sustainability in oyster farming, using shells from previous years to cultivate new oysters in Yaquina Bay. This practice not only preserves the Oregon native oyster but also reinforces the restaurant’s reputation for environmental responsibility.
Over the years, the restaurant has blended history with modernity, updating facilities while maintaining the classic charm that has attracted locals and visitors alike. Special touches, like the display of the Brother Jonathan’s ship wheel, connect diners to Portland’s rich maritime past.
Whether for a casual meal or a special occasion, Dan & Louis Oyster Bar offers a memorable seafood experience. Its combination of historical significance, quality ingredients, and family dedication makes it a landmark in Portland’s dining scene.n online orders.

Ox is known for Argentinian-inspired cuisine cooked on a wood-fired grill. I highly recommend this Portland restaurant for meat lovers and those seeking modern cooking techniques.

Nostrana serves inventive regional Italian cuisine with Pacific Northwest ingredients. They perfectly embody the Italian concept nostrani, which means “ours” or “local.”
Since they serve Italian food, we tried one of their pizzas. My whole family and I love the simple yet deliciously served marinara. It has a thin, not-so-chewy crust, topped with slightly cooked marinara sauce with garlic and wild oregano.

I was very impressed with Shalom Y’all’s variety of offerings. Alongside Mediterranean food, they also serve Turkish coffee and cocktails. It’s like visiting two countries in one restaurant.

Keith Lee (a well-known food critic) gave their English pea and asparagus green curry a perfect ten rating, so I decided to try it on our visit. It’s a vegetable-focused dish that features fresh, seasonal ingredients from Southeast Asia.
The dish had a bright, spring-forward flavor that’s both sweet and vegetal. The peas brought a natural sweetness, while the asparagus added a subtle, earthy mineral quality.
