Pros
- Piano lessons for all ages
- Conducts lessons using the Complete Instruction Method
- Combined approach in piano lessons program
- Teachers have degrees in Music with at least seven years of experience
- Has great performing opportunities (free recitals twice per year)
- Offers family discount
- Uses both the Suzuki method as well as the Faber and Faber method
Cons
- Not a piano-focused school
- Large music learning center
Eliason School of Music has been teaching piano, guitar, violin, voice, and cello lessons since 2004. They teach students of all ages, but for private piano lessons, students as young as the age of four can enroll.
Speaking of which, we believe they’re one of the best for one-on-one piano lessons, owing to their expert instructors. They also have a variety of methods to choose from, so you can learn in whatever way you think is best for you (or your child).
They provide professional instruction in both the Suzuki method and the Faber and Faber method. Both are excellent places for young children to begin, as Suzuki taught music as if they were learning a foreign language, and the latter is known as Piano Adventures for All Ages.
We also like their combined approach that allows students to enjoy playing a variety of songs while also learning more deeply. This is accomplished by transitioning to the study of scales, musical theory, and sight-reading after they have developed technical habits of play.
Lessons are also easily accessible because, in addition to teaching at their school, they also offer online and home instruction. So, whichever environment you prefer for your piano lesson, they will provide you with flexible options.
Finally, while some may believe that a larger piano school would be less convenient than a small and piano-focused studio, we believe they have an advantage. One advantage is that they can match students with the right teacher because the options are bigger.

Pros
- Piano lessons for adults and teens
- Enhance musicianship and artistic creativity
- Teaches a wide range of musical genres
- Good value for money
- Offers scholarship
- Great amenities for scholars
Cons
- Doesn’t teach piano lessons to kids
If you’re trying to learn how to play piano just for the sake of having it as a hobby, then we think Portland Piano Lab is the best fit for you. They offer lessons to beginners and intermediate to advanced hobbyist players who wish to rekindle their skills or learn a new musical style.
Their main approach is to help their students develop excellent musicianship and artistic creativity. This means that each student’s lessons are tailored to their specific musical goals and interests – great for those who prefer personalized learning.
Unfortunately, Piano Portland Lab only teaches piano to adults and teenagers. So, if you’re a parent looking for a place for your child to unlock their piano skills, obviously, this isn’t the place for you.
On the plus side, we believe they value their customers’ money because of their transparent price guide. Their tuition fees are very reasonable (ranging from $50 to $70 per lesson), and students can pay weekly.
They also provide scholarships to highly motivated students, which is an important factor for us to consider. It has many features that scholars will appreciate, such as access to an acoustic or digital piano for practicing, time for 30-60 minutes of daily practice, and daytime availability.
Overall, we believe Piano Portland Lab is an excellent choice for those interested in learning to play the piano as a hobby. You may also have the opportunity to perform in the community, aside from studio recitals.

Pros
- Private piano teaching
- Has high skilled and professional instructors
- Variety of learning styles
- Ideal environment for learning piano
- Guaranteed one-on-one lesson
- Other piano services also available
Cons
- Lack of information regarding their piano lessons
- No rates available
Michelle’s Piano Co. is a family-owned business in Portland that deals with all aspects of pianos. They offer piano rentals, moving, repairing, and other services – including piano lessons – which we will highlight.
For a studio designed solemnly with their love of piano, students may find their space a great place to learn how to play piano. About that, they have dedicated a special section of their showroom for private teaching as well as for recitals.
The studio is also proud of its highly skilled and professional instructors.
We discovered that some of them are currently performing in the Portland Metro area, while others are teaching at local universities and colleges. To us, this means students will receive lessons from experts in the field.
On that note, students will benefit from a variety of learning styles as they have extensive experience and knowledge in playing the piano. It’s just that they don’t disclose the type of method teaching they do unless you enroll, which is a massive drawback for us
There was also no information about the prices and inclusions for a piano lesson session. However, as previously stated, they offer private lessons, so if it’s a one-on-one lesson you need, they can certainly provide it.
Lastly, going to Michelle’s Piano will give you access to a large selection of pianos that you can practice on at home. That’s why even though there were obviously some disadvantages, they still have some pluses that their competitors don’t have.

Pros
- Holistic piano lessons for students of all ages
- Has their very own piano curriculum
- Solid lesson approach
- Use their own graduated system to teach piano lessons
- Offers virtual piano lessons
Cons
- Possibility of additional expenses, aside from enrollment fees
There were a lot of reasons why Vesper School of Music is a great choice to get piano lessons. Students who took piano lessons from them actually applauded them for a wonderful experience to explore their love of music.
The first reason is their very own piano curriculum developed by their founder, which in fact, newbies may find very convenient. From their first lesson, students are taught music much as a language – first by ear, then by reading.
They also exceeded our expectations when it comes to the lesson approach. Their piano teachers use many different, proven techniques to help students understand music reading from the inside out.
Speaking of, they use their own graduated system to teach piano techniques, and provide pieces so students can practice each week. This, for us, is a great way to ensure that they develop healthy practice habits that enable them to play well.
Another quality we looked for in a piano school is its ability to foster students’ creativity. Vesper genuinely met our criteria by encouraging their students to incorporate their own creative elements into each lesson, in addition to learning memorable songs.
The only issue you might have with Vesper School of Music is the possibility of purchasing music books, which are required for theory classes. However, this occurs only on rare occasions as the majority of the piano music they teach is from their own music library.

Pros
- Specializes in early start piano lessons
- Uses Wunderkeys method
- One-on-one instruction with preschoolers
- Has downloadable lessons available
- Option for online classes
- Has great reviews from the parents
Cons
- Doesn’t teach piano classes for adults
Want to provide your child an early start to a lifetime piano journey? Voice and Piano Lessons with Anya Kalina specializes in that.
Not to mention that you can kill two birds with one stone by taking voice lessons from them as well (but that’s another story to cover).
Anya Kalina has a piano program for children ages 3 to 5 and for children ages 5 and above. But the good thing is even though they have students of the same age, their teaching methods differ with each student.
They use the WunderKeys method, which was designed for one-on-one instruction with preschoolers. This actually is one of the best beginner piano lessons for developing piano skills, keyboard awareness, and rhythmic understanding for a successful piano career.
We also find their downloadable lessons to be very beneficial for students who are unable to attend their face-to-face sessions. There’s also the option to enroll in online classes, which some may find useful, especially for busy-day learners.
Looking at the reviews, there were parents who talked about how their kids enjoyed their lessons with Anya. From what we’ve learned, what kept their child interested is the accompanying storyline alongside every lesson.
There were also notes from the parents about how their children’s piano playing has improved significantly over the last few years thanks to Anya. The only thing we didn’t like was the lack of client rating information, but that wasn’t a problem at all in terms of service quality.

Pros
- Inclusive and Safe Environment
- Tailored Piano Lessons
- Beautiful and Versatile Space
Cons
- Limited Availability
Lydian Music Studios offers piano lessons taught by Nicholas Meyer and Katherine Goforth in their vibrant and inclusive music-making space located in Portland, Oregon.
We prefer them more than others as they can provide a safe and inclusive space for students, instructors, and performers. This supportive atmosphere will definitely encourage you to explore music freely and express yourself without fear of judgment.
Another benefit in working with them is that you will have your very own piano lessons since it is customized to suit each student’s individual goals and musical preferences.
Whether you want to learn classical, contemporary, or any other genre, the instructors will craft lessons that resonate with you, making learning more enjoyable and engaging.
Aside from these, we like that the studio offers various rehearsal spaces, including Studio A with a grand piano and Studio B with a digital piano.
These spaces can accommodate piano rehearsals, vocal rehearsals, band practices, intimate shows, and events, providing students with a conducive environment for learning and creating music.
As a new and growing music studio, Lydian Music Studios might have limited availability for piano lessons due to high demand. Prospective students may need to plan in advance to secure a slot for lessons.

We like their tiered pricing options as it can cater to students at different skill levels. This approach ensures that students receive appropriate instruction based on their proficiency.
While the decentralized model benefits teachers, offering a collective approach, it might lead to inconsistent experiences for students. The teaching style, curriculum, and learning environment could vary depending on the associated teacher.
