Pros
- 35 years in service

- Competitive pricing
- Personal training and coaching session for members
Cons
- Issues with customer service
- Monthly payments include the initiation fee
- Usually crowded
Hollywood Fitness has a little bit of everything, especially with stuff that most gym-goers enjoy. It is open 24 hours a day, with amenities that we not only consider adequate, but a bit above and beyond the standard gym,
For nearly 35 years, the place has been a Portland fitness industry leader, which is why it earned a spot on our list. Not to mention all of the exclusive benefits and amenities available only to members.
As mentioned, Hollywood Fitness is ideal for around-the-clock workouts due to its operating hours, which are only guaranteed to members by the way. Plus, parking for all members is available behind their building – perfectly convenient for vehicle owners.
Their facility is also a gym goer’s paradise, with spacious working areas, 20 tons of free weights, three cardio studios, a multipurpose group exercise area, and locker rooms. All these provide a pleasant environment for members using their gym.
Interested clients can select one of three membership levels: basic, premium, or ultimate. From the title itself, the basic is their cheapest option, costing $19.99 per month, with the ultimate at $49.99 per month.
Members of the ultimate level receive the best customer access of all including coaching and personalized trainer workouts. We think this is something you can aim for if you want to commit to this location in the long run.
Although we love Hollywood Fitness and its terrific gym services, some clients never renew their memberships due to the staff, which is a red flag for us. On the bright side, it’s easy to let go if you wish – so dip your toes a bit just to get a feel of things.

Pros
- Free one-day pass for new members
- Greats selection of workout equipment and fitness options
- Additional amenities like saunas, hot tubs, and steam rooms
- Isn’t always crowded
- Has an on-site bar
- Family membership available
Cons
- Quite pricey
- Small facility
Those who join Lloyd Athletic Club receive a free one-day pass, which is honestly our favorite feature. It’s not every day that a company like this offers free services, although it isn’t exactly unique in this kind of trade.
The thing that makes us believe they’re different from other gyms is that they don’t have sales staff. This usually translates to not being pushy with customers, at least in terms of purchasing membership plans at the base level.
Fortunately, we consider their membership to be neither affordable nor prohibitively expensive. If you can afford to pay $39 to $69 per month, you’ll have access to all of the workout equipment, fitness programs, and other amenities such as saunas and hot tubs.
If the above price is too high for you, you can get a family membership, which costs around $99 to $119 per month for four family members. The benefits are the same – you just have to get your family members to be your gym buddies!
On another note, Lloyd Athletic Club is a perfect fit if you don’t want to work out with a large group of people. Because the facility isn’t huge, you won’t have to worry about a lot of walk-ins (this family-owned gym is quite fond of its members, we observed).
Overall, gym goers will probably feel right at home thanks to its wide range of membership benefits and welcoming atmosphere. Although it’s easy to say they’re not cheap, the place has managed to compete with many of Portland’s large national fitness chains.

Pros
- Offers free trial to prospective members
- Includes group classes, access to fitness experts, and nutritional counseling
- Members have access to spacious locker rooms, hydromassage, and tanning
- Extensively trained staff and modern facilities
Cons
- Limited membership options
- Unclear pricing
MUV Fitness in Southeast Portland provides prospective members with a free trial membership, which explains a large number of gym goers. But don’t be concerned about working out in a crowded area – based on what we’ve seen, they sure can handle it.
Aside from the amenities, their commitment to fitness is respectable, at least in our humble opinion. In fact, we appreciate how dedicated they are to their gym members (clients shared with us how committed they are to their roles).
Personal visits to their facility showed us that they have an encouraging environment – chill and lack the typical gym aggression. On top of that is their extensively trained staff, which, according to their members, are all friendly.
The perks of joining this fitness family include group classes, access to fitness experts, and nutritional counseling. Members will also enjoy additional benefits such as access to spacious locker rooms, hydromassage, and tanning.
On the negative side, we find their membership options to be very limited, with only two options: premium and elite. We also find their lack of transparency regarding costs to be very frustrating (you’d have to get a quote for yourself to get something more accurate).
Despite this, the hype surrounding joining MuV is enormous, based on their portfolio and online reviews. We believe this is because they give free trials to potential customers, so we think trying it out won’t hurt.
4. Strength Union

Pros
- Specializes in strenuous training
- Numerous community events
- Four membership options
- Has membership available for students
- Free of contract
- Membership cost doesn’t include initiation fee
- Merchandise available
Cons
- Pricey membership
Sign up for a gym membership at Strength Union if you’re looking for strenuous training – they have all the equipment for it. They welcome members into their gym community of like-minded individuals seeking physical and mental strength.
On top of that, gym members can look forward to numerous opportunities to interact with other amazing, strong people. Friendly lifting competitions, team events, powerlifting meets, and team training are among the exciting activities that this gym offers.
In terms of memberships, Strength Union offers four options, one of which is beneficial to student gym-goers. Students can pay $50 per month for full access to the gym, while regulars will pay $70 per month under their standard membership.
Another thing that we like about them is that members aren’t obligated to enter a contract, so a cancellation can be easy. No contract also means better flexibility in payments – plus, you don’t get charged an initiation fee.
Despite the fact that there aren’t many reviews online, they all reflect positive feedback on the gym. People left comments about how their staff provides excellent training and coaching, as well as a welcoming community of lifters.
Finally, die-hard Strength Union gym goers can purchase merchandise (t-shirts, hoodies, tumblers, etc.) from their shop to enhance their workout experience. It’s quite pricey, to be honest, but do feel free to look around.

Pros
- Easy to join for new gym goers
- Three membership options available
- Unlimited access to classes for premier members
- Access to all gym equipment and work out areas
- Led by certified fitness professionals
- First class is free
- Downloadable application available
Cons
- Does not publicly disclose its prices
If you’re looking for a more structured environment that isn’t centered on the weight room, Orangetheory Fitness in Portland is a good option. The gym is actually designed to boost metabolism, so the stuff you’ll find here is slightly different.
Joining Orangetheory is easy and will only take a few minutes and a little bit of cash, of course. They offer three types of membership: premier, elite, and basic – each will determine your access to classes.
So if you want unlimited access, sign up for a premier membership. Although we strongly suggest trying out a few classes first just to see if they’re a right fit (remember, this gym isn’t focused on the weight room!)
Members are also entitled to other benefits, such as treadmill sprints and full-fledged cross-training circuits with dumbbell squats and kettlebell swings. They will also get access to resistance training and cardiovascular fitness.
All workouts and classes are led by certified fitness professionals, so the membership fee is well worth it. Speaking of prices, they vary depending on which club you attend.
Unfortunately, this branch of the Portland gym doesn’t publicly disclose its prices. As much as it feels like a sales tactic at this point, we do recommend dropping by to get a quote for yourself if the benefits spark your interest.
Orangetheory members get their first class for free, so think of it as an additional benefit along with all the others we mentioned. It’s also open to first-time visitors and local residents if certain conditions are met.
If you’re still on the fence about joining this gym, we suggest you download their app where you can learn about everything that awaits you. Members are also encouraged to have this so that they can easily access workout summaries and track their progress – pretty neat!
