The caring team at Zeller Chapel of the Roses understands the importance of serving families during a time of grief, which is one of the reasons they are among the best in the city. In fact, the facility serves Portland families of all faiths and cultures.

As part of their overall funeral service, they offer personalized and traditional cremation and burial options, as well as direct cremation. So, whatever you believe will best serve the memory of your loved ones, Zeller can make it happen.

On another positive note, we’ve discovered how helpful they are with long-distance funeral arrangements. Although there were some unavoidable challenges with pre-arrangements made by their staff, it’s comforting to know that the company navigated through it all.

When it comes to teamwork, this funeral home can assist you in planning a small memorial service or a large funeral celebration for your loved ones. If you ask us, that is a significant factor in evaluating their service.

Additionally, we like that they provide for the special needs of America’s veterans and their families. As a founding level one community partner of “We Honor Veterans,” their staff is well-versed in the benefits available to veterans and their families.

Finally, Zeller received points for convenience because they have 2 comfortable visitation rooms and a large chapel that seats up to 150 guests, making it ideal for intimate funerals. On top of that, there is plenty of parking for your guests.

Pros

  • Provides both direct cremation and burial
  • Offers a traditional burial and cremation with memorial service
  • Oregon’s leader in low-cost burial & cremation for over 30 years
  • Online arrangements available
  • State-of-the-art cremation facility
  • Additional services include green cremations and funeral merchandise
  • Personalized ceremonies
  • Provides pre-planning

Cons

  • Minor miscommunication issues on their online family planner
  • Small facility

With all of our research, we discovered that Crown Memorial Center is one of the most affordable funeral homes in Portland. Not only are they the city’s leader in low-cost burial and cremation, but they are also Oregon’s leader in low-cost burial and cremation.

They have been in business for over 30 years, and the fact that they are still an affordable funeral service today, despite modernity, impressed us. Actually, they don’t offer low-cost funerals; they’re also pretty great to work with, in our opinion.

There goes their online family planner that provides simple steps at your leisure, ideal for making arrangements without having to travel. Unfortunately, we’ve heard of the poor communication on their part, which disappoints us.

However, if you ever want to make arrangements with them personally (which we recommend), we are confident you will not be underwhelmed. Their facility, despite its small size, has a welcoming atmosphere that feels like a warm hug for the families.

Inside, there is a cutting-edge cremation facility and a small family room/casket room for privacy before the funeral service begins. They also certainly aid in the writing of obituaries, making your mind at ease in this regard.

As previously stated, this funeral home is extremely affordable as no “third-party contractors” are used in any aspect of the funeral service. What’s more, the overall cost includes additional services such as green cremations and funeral merchandise.

Pros

  • Serving the community of Portland since 1854
  • Managed by licensed funeral directors
  • Detailed funeral services available
  • Offers green burials, veterans’ burials, and traditional Jewish services
  • Convenient location (perfect for guest commuters, near two cemeteries, ample parking)
  • Intimate chapel
  • Provides interactive grief support for the families

Cons

  • Relatively small chapel and funeral receptions

Holman’s Funeral Service’s best feature (aside from their services, of course) is their location. For starters, their location is close to downtown Portland, TriMet public transportation, and the freeway system, making it ideal for the funeral’s commute guests.

Now, that isn’t the only advantage of their location; the funeral home is also close to two cemeteries. That is why arranging for burial is less of a hassle, though you don’t have to worry about that seeing as Holman’s can surely help with burial arrangements.

Speaking of which, it should come as no surprise that they provide detailed funeral services: viewings, visitations, memorials, receptions, cremations, and even preneed transfers. They also provide projection services for video tributes and a piano for soothing music, so that’s a plus.

But what really sets them apart is that they also offer green burials, veterans’ burials, and traditional Jewish services to Portland’s Jewish communities. Well, they are completely sincere when they say they serve families of all faiths.

The grief support provided by Holman’s Funeral Service to families is also noteworthy. That’s what they called aftercare, and it included things like grief libraries, a variety of support groups and special programs, and so on.

Finally, this funeral home is managed by licensed funeral directors, so there’s no need to be concerned about funeral services with them. After all, they’ve been serving Portland’s communities since 1854, so there’s no doubt about their expertise in this field.

Pros

  • Direct cremation and burial provided along with funeral services
  • Personalize items like memory boxes are also offered
  • Run by certified funeral professionals
  • Funeral directors available on call 24 hours a day to assist
  • Spacious facility
  • Other services include obituaries, grief support, pre-planning, etc.

Cons

  • Minor inconsistent/poor accommodations
  • Office is closed on Sundays

Although Rose City Cemetery & Funeral Home, like any other funeral home, can provide services at any church or cemetery, we believe their services are more convenient since they have their own cemetery – The Rose City Cemetery. It has been in use since 1906.

Before we get to their funeral services, the cemetery has many graves for sale, including cremation graves, green burial graves, mausoleum crypts, and cremation niches. From our perspective, the lovely grounds could be an ideal final resting place for your loved ones.

Direct cremation and burial are obviously available, in addition to traditional funeral ceremonies, memorialization, transferring and forwarding/receiving remains, and funeral merchandise. Our favorite feature is their ability to personalize items such as memory boxes and keepsake jewelry.

However, despite the best services they provide, we were disappointed to learn about their inconsistent/poor accommodations for bereaved families. Unfortunately, that is a turn-off for us, and we look forward to them improving their customer service.

It’s a good thing they’re run by certified funeral professionals, so we didn’t lose faith in them completely. Moreover, even though their facility is not open every day, it’s comforting to know that funeral directors are available on call 24 hours a day to assist.

Now, for their facility, we believe you’ll be pleased to learn that they have a large facility with a colorful mural, ideal for greeting families with a warm welcome. There is also a mature park nearby that provides peace and privacy before the funeral service begins.

Pros

  • Family-owned and operated, founded in 1958
  • Direct cremation, cremation with memorial services, viewings, burial assistance, and pre-planning
  • Comfortable and private funeral home
  • Chapel is equipped with an audiovisual system
  • Grief support is also offered
  • Reasonable rates

Cons

  • Does not offer direct burial
  • Small but intimate reception room

What we like about Hustad Funeral Home is that it is family owned and operated, which we believe means it is family oriented. Not surprisingly, their portfolio shows they provide a wide range of services to meet the needs and customs of any family in the city.

They also provide services at reasonable prices – the estimated total cost with them is around or more than $5,000, which is simply the pricing system used by the average funeral home in the area. This includes extra services such as caskets and merchandise.

However, while this funeral home is excellent in terms of accommodations and reasonable rates, they do not offer direct burial, which we believe would be extremely convenient. They do, however, provide burial assistance, so everything is fine.

But don’t get us wrong: Hustad’s funeral services continue to exceed our expectations. Direct cremation, cremation with memorial services, viewings, and pre-planning are all options available through the funeral home.

On the plus side, we find their facility to be very welcoming. They have a private counseling office, as well as viewing rooms, a reception room (for 25 guests), and a chapel, all in one building.

In terms of their chapel, it can accommodate large or small groups of 150 to 175 people. It’s outfitted with a cutting-edge audio-visual system, which we appreciate for enhancing traditional or memorial gatherings, particularly video tributes.
