Located conveniently in east of Downtown Portland, Black Diamond Recording Studios is accessible and has a solid reputation as a studio. After trying their services, we saw exactly why.

First, we really like that they’re stocked with the most cutting-edge gear and equipment. They have industry-grade mixing consoles, converters, computers, audio monitoring equipment, rack gear, and microphones to ensure premium sound quality.

They also have various percussive instruments and a piano and organ ready. Do know that they don’t have acoustic or electric guitars on hand, so you might have to bring your own should you need them.

You can check their full list of equipment on their website for your reference. Their staff on board have extensive experience with mixing, recording, and utilizing recording software.

They also all have a background in music, so you’re sure that they’ll be able to understand your needs if you’re planning to record your own songs. In our experience, they’re also really easy to talk to and work with.

From what we’ve seen, they have everything you can possibly need in a studio. Their live rooms, isolation rooms, and vocal booths are all designed with the best sound-proofing so you don’t need to worry about the quality of the recording.

To add to this, they even have a green room above the studio with a kitchen, bathroom, laundry room, and two decks. It’s really designed to make sure that their clients are comfy and that the environment is conducive to work.

Do know that they’re by appointment only. Same day bookings are not allowed, unfortunately, because it will depend on the availability of the audio engineer.

They don’t have an online form for you to book a session, which would’ve been more convenient. Instead, it’s best to give them a call or email them with your inquiry.

As for the rates, you’ll have to contact them for a full quote. Prices vary depending on the sound engineer and session length.

Be prepared to make a deposit when you schedule an appointment.

Pros

  • Has both analog tape and digital workstations to balance vintage and modern tastes
  • No extra charge for using complete set of instruments
  • Upfront pricing
  • Relaxed atmosphere

Cons

  • Dropping by the studio for inquiries isn’t allowed
  • Online booking form not reliable
  • New engineers need to hire in-house assistant

Founded by Larry Crane in 1997, Jackpot Recording Studio has made its name as a recording studio through the years working with big names in the industry.

Although they occasionally do recordings for voice overs or radio spots, they’re known for and really specialize in recording performance-based music sessions.

We think they’re a fantastic option if you want to record with an analog recording system since they are centered around their custom-built Rupert Neve Designs console.

They’re not purely analog though – they have both analog tape and digital workstations to balance vintage and modern tastes. Through their system, engineers can easily track full band sessions and even single musicians.

They’re fully equipped with an array of guitars, amps, drums, effect pedals, piano, organ, and even old school effects units like plate and spring reverbs. They can accommodate a full band, from what we’ve seen.

To add to that, we like how relaxed their atmosphere is. It’s a conducive space to get creative and record music.

As they say, they help “make it sound like a record, not just a recording”. Their staff engineers are all very friendly and easy to talk to, which we like.

As for pricing, they’re very straightforward. You can check out their rates below:

Studio Day Rate (without engineer)$350 per day
Studio Hourly Rate (without engineer)$50 per hour
Engineer RatesConsult with them for a quotation
Pre-Session Tape Deck Calibration$50

Do know that hourly sessions have a 3-hour minimum. Engineers that are new to the studio are also required to hire an in-house assistant for $20 per hour.

When booking a session, the best mode of communication is email. You can’t drop in their studio for inquiries without an appointment, unfortunately.

  • Versatile – with 4 recording rooms, each with a different purpose
  • Has an independent music production and audio mastering studio in-house

Cons

  • Limited info on website
  • Not upfront about pricing

Falcon Recording Studio was founded in 1982 by Dennis Carter. Since then, they have built a solid reputation as a studio in Portland.

What we like about them is how versatile they are. They’re not just a studio for recording music, they also offer mastering, digital editing, tape restoration, and transfers from tape formats to digital.

They’re a one stop shop for all kinds of recording needs, whether you’re recording your EP or doing voice overs. To accomplish this, they have four different rooms available, each with a specific purpose in mind.

They have two rooms (Studio A and Studio D SW) for recording music equipped with the best digital and analog gear, instruments, microphone preamps, and even vintage microphones to create the sound you’re going for.

They also have a room (Studio B) best used for overdubs, mixing, voice over recording, and digital editing.

We also like that they have an independent music production and audio mastering studio called Audiosiege that offers professional and custom audio services to recording artists. You can find this in Studio C.

This studio is run by a small team of four very talented engineers with a musical background. This gives them an advantage because they have enriching insight on the creative process.

To add to that, their team is also very friendly and easy to work with. The whole studio gives off a relaxed vibe that makes it conducive to be productive and still have fun during recording.

We do wish that their website offered more information, especially about their rates. Although they have an online form, we found it best to email them for inquiries, they’re very responsive there.

  • Upfront pricing
  • Offers packages

Cons

  • Smaller compared to competitors
  • Small team (only 2 engineers)

This full service recording studio owned and operated by engineer and producer Matt Greco caught our eye because of their proven track record and positive client feedback.

After trying their recording studio ourselves, it was not difficult to see why they’re well respected in the industry. From our experience, we especially liked their careful attention to their work, seamless workflow, and deep passion for music that shows in every project they take on.

The Rye Room really aims to provide musicians a recording experience that’s tailor fit to their needs. They value the originality and unique elements of the music of each singer or group, and they really try to make it shine as they craft the record.

Their studio has this homey and rustic feel to it. You can see that they really put a lot of thought in the vibe of the studio, ensuring the comfort of their clients.

Despite it looking like a home studio, it is well equipped for all your recording needs. They have recorders, monitoring gear, microphones, mixers, plug-ins, and an array of instruments ready for use.

They also have tuned and custom-wired rooms for good acoustics so you get a premium quality recording. As for pricing, check out the table below for their rates:

Recording$70/hr
Mixing$350/song
Editing: $70/hr

They also offer packages that you can check out here, where you can also make a booking.

However, we noticed that their studio is significantly smaller compared to the other studios we featured here. So that’s something to take into consideration.

Established in 2007, The Map Room is a recording studio well known for its affordability and welcoming staff. If you’re on a tight budget but don’t want to compromise on quality, they’re a great option.

Their recording studio has superb acoustics and is well equipped with industry-grade gear and equipment. They employ both analog and digital recording technology to produce the sound and feel you’re going for.

The acoustics sound tight, even, and lively, based on our experience. They have extensive experience in acoustic treatment, which they can alter to make the best acoustic environment for your project.

We like that they also have instruments like a grand piano, vintage keys, and different kinds of unique microphones that you can experiment with. They also have a solid team of dedicated musicians, producers, and engineers that are fun to collaborate with.

We love how communicative and in tune the staff are. They’re really easy to work with, making recording a fun and exciting experience.

To add to this, the whole studio has a comfortable and homey feel. They even have a lounge with a sink, mini fridge, toaster oven, and your choice of coffee or tea.

Granted, the studio is a bit smaller compared to other studios. So that’s something to consider.

We wish that their website offered more information, as it’s a bit difficult to look through all their services.

They don’t have an online booking form.  If you want to consult with them, email is your best bet to reach them, based on experience.
