5 Best Singing Lessons in Portland, OR That Hit the Right Note

Instructor expertise: We favored coaches with solid training and real stage experience. They’re better equipped to teach breath support without pushing your voice too hard.

Vocal health: Great singing shouldn’t leave your throat wrecked. We looked for studios that teach healthy technique, anatomy, and strain prevention.

Class flexibility: Busy schedules need more than one lesson slot. We checked for group classes, weekend hours, and in-home options.

Inclusivity and support: Singing takes confidence, not pressure. We prioritized studios that welcome neurodivergent students and support performance anxiety.

Growing up, I’m no stranger to music lessons, but my voice could still use a proper tune-up. Finding the best singing lesson in Portland, OR means matching the right coach to my goals.

Like me, maybe you’re eyeing a choir spot, prepping for auditions, or trying to survive a full set without losing steam. Maybe you’d just like your shower concerts to sound less experimental?

Luckily, Portland’s vocal coaches cover everything from classical technique to rock-ready power. I compared some local studios to see who really helps singers improve breath, pitch, and confidence.

How much does a singing lesson cost in Portland, OR?

Private voice lessons in Portland typically cost $50 to $90 per hour. Rates can range from $30 to over $100, depending on the teacher and lesson length.

A 30-minute lesson usually costs $30 to $50. This works well for young children and complete beginners.

A 45-minute session often runs from $40 to $70. It’s a solid option for intermediate singers building technique.

A full 60-minute lesson generally costs $50 to $90 or more. This length suits advanced students and working musicians who need more focused training.

1. Resound NW: A Place To Sing

Website

Address: 1532 SW Jefferson St

Contact: (503) 489-7464 / [email protected]

Hours: Daily, 9 AM – 9 PM

Starting voice lessons can feel nerve-racking, but Resound NW makes the first note far less scary. They welcome complete beginners and seasoned singers, tailoring lessons around your goals, taste, and favorite styles.

The Premiere Program includes two or four private lessons each month, plus one Song Studio class. It’s a nice balance of focused coaching and low-pressure practice in front of supportive fellow singers.

Their instructors cover everything from classical and musical theater to pop, rock, jazz, and contemporary music. Performance Practices also tackles stage fright, audience connection, and those awkward “what do I do with my hands” moments.

I also like that many teachers have experience supporting neurodivergent students, including those with ADHD, autism, or sensory sensitivities. That thoughtful approach can make lessons feel much more comfortable.

The downside is accessibility, since the building has no step-free entrance or elevator, and the restroom is tight. Premiere credits also expire monthly, so missed lessons won’t wait around for your encore.

Pros

  • Private lessons plus band rehearsals
  • Regular live-performance opportunities
  • Dedicated program for adults
  • Little Wing classes for ages four to five
  • Proprietary Method App
  • Teaches practical vocal fundamentals

Cons

  • Not a fully PWD-accessible location
  • Premium credits expire monthly

More Than Just Lessons—It’s a Community!

I began taking voice lessons with Dan because I wasn’t happy with my musical performances and felt I needed to brush up on my vocal technique. Dan is not only a superb teacher, but an excellent coach and mentor. Another perk that I hadn’t anticipated was becoming part of the Resound NW community. It’s been wonderful to listen to and support other singers and musicians through the song studios and school concerts, whether it’s their first performance or thousandth. It’s also wonderful to learn and be heard in a safe and supportive environment. Thanks Dan & Resound!

A Fun and Safe Space to Explore Your Voice

I just had my first lesson with Courtney, and it was great! She was so welcoming and created a fun and safe environment for me to explore my voice and learn about myself and what fits my voice best. Highly recommend taking a lesson from her if you’re looking for someone to sing with!

2. Lydian Music Studios

Website

Address: 801 NE 28th Ave

Contact: (971) 319-4734 / [email protected]

Hours: Wednesday-Monday, 7 AM – 11 PM | Tuesday, 7 AM – 10 PM

If you want stronger vocals without treating your throat like a punching bag, Lydian Music Studios is worth a look. Several instructors understand vocal anatomy, tension management, and healthier ways to build power and stamina.

Lessons can cover breathing, ear training, music theory, range, and performance prep. One teacher even tackles rock distortion after laying down solid classical foundations, which is a pretty smart way to growl without wrecking your voice!

Students can test their nerves at supportive quarterly recitals rather than being tossed straight into the spotlight. Piano lessons are also available if you’d like to accompany yourself instead of waiting for a backing track.

I also appreciate that at least one instructor specifically supports students with ADHD, autism, and other neurodivergent identities. Since teaching specialties vary, though, it’s best to request someone whose background matches your needs.

The main catch is the 24-hour cancellation policy, since late changes still cost you.

Pros

  • Strong vocal-health instruction
  • Covers ear training and musicianship
  • Rock and pop technique available
  • Supportive quarterly recitals
  • Neurodivergent-supportive instructor available

Cons

  • Strict 24-hour cancellation policy
  • Instructor specialties vary

Six Years of Incredible Growth and Confidence

My son has been taking voice lessons with Nicholas Meyer of Lydian Studios for over 6 years. Nicholas is a kind, friendly, and extremely knowledgeable and professional mentor and teacher. My son thrived in high school choir and at many solo performances thanks to his work with Nicholas. Lydian’s recital opportunities are warm and inviting events that put students at ease. Highly recommend!

From Nervous Beginner to Having a Blast

I had a fantastic time taking singing lessons here. As a complete beginner with no prior singing experience, I was a bit nervous, but Emilie made me feel comfortable right from the start. The lessons are fun and engaging, and I’ve learned so much. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking to improve their singing skills or just have a great time learning something new.

Audition prep feels much less terrifying when your coaches know both vocal technique and stagecraft. VOXnorthwest offers personalized lessons, repertoire guidance, and performance coaching for singers chasing theater roles or college spots.

Matthew Hayward brings a 25-year performance career, university teaching, and experience as a master clinician and interpretive coach.

Angela Niederloh adds 15 years of leading roles with Portland Opera, plus young-artist training with Houston Grand Opera and San Francisco Opera.

Their lessons cover classical, musical theater, and contemporary styles, so you’re not boxed into one vocal lane. I also like that they offer a Vocal Health Assessment to flag possible technical concerns and shape future training.

Do note that the main studio is a commercial space in Southeast Portland, but the secondary location near Beaverton is home-based, which may feel less professional for students who prefer the atmosphere of a traditional music school.

Saturday availability and regular hours also aren’t clearly published. You’ll need to confirm both before planning your vocal takeover.

Pros

  • Experienced opera-performing co-founders
  • Specialized audition preparation
  • Classical and musical-theatre coaching
  • Contemporary repertoire also available
  • Dedicated vocal-health service
  • Main commercial Portland studio

Cons

  • One location is home-based, which may feel less professional
  • Fixed opening hours are unpublished/Saturday availability needs confirming

A Truly Life-Changing Vocal Turnaround

I began at Vox NW when I was 17. When I began, it hurt so much to sing that I was considering giving up. When I met Mathew, everything changed. People started complimenting me on my voice, and so many opportunities became available to me. Taking lessons with Mathew genuinely changed my life for the better. I always looked forward to lessons and found them incredibly therapeutic. Highly recommend him to anyone trying to learn how to sing; he will change your voice for the better within a few months.

Got My Confidence Back on Stage!

I strongly recommend Voxnorthwest Voice Studio. Over two years of lessons with Matt, I gained a deeper understanding of vocal technique, expanded my range, and broadened my repertoire. Matt is an outstanding instructor who blends positivity with actionable, effective coaching. My goal was to rebuild my confidence and feel comfortable singing in front of others again, and thanks to Matt’s support, I achieved it. An excellent studio for singers at any level.

Address: 4220 SE Salmon St

Hours: Monday-Sunday, 8 AM – 8 PM

For busy Portland families, having music lessons come to your door is a pretty sweet deal. In Home Music Mentor offers private piano, guitar, and voice lessons around Mt. Tabor, Laurelhurst, Hawthorne, Sunnyside, and Montavilla.

Learning at home means skipping traffic and practicing on the instrument you already know. It can also feel less intimidating for beginners who’d rather avoid the formal studio spotlight.

Lessons are available for adults and children, usually starting around age five or six. Families with several budding musicians can also ask about back-to-back or shared scheduling.

Piano and guitar are the main focus, though voice lessons are advertised too. Singers should confirm that a suitable instructor currently covers their neighborhood.

Another catch is that there’s no public Portland studio advertised, so you’ll need enough quiet space at home. Voice-teacher availability may also vary by area, though virtual lessons could save the day.

Pros

  • Teachers travel to students’ homes/avoids regular cross-town commuting
  • Piano, guitar, and voice offered
  • Lessons for children and adults
  • Flexible weekday and weekend availability
  • Virtual instruction may be available

Cons

  • Service range depends on home address
  • Voice-teacher availability may vary
  • Requires a suitable home practice area

Amazing Progress Right in Our Living Room

My son has been doing Portland piano and voice lessons at home with Clara for five months, and he can already play Let It Go while singing along. Clara keeps him engaged by mixing in little improvisation games, and he now loves to show off for the whole family after dinner. Having the lessons in our Portland home makes it so easy to stay consistent, and the progress has been incredible.

Our Daughter Looks Forward to This Every Week!

We have had the best experience this past year. Our daughter (10 years old) looks forward to lessons every week. Communication is wonderful and easy with the owner and our instructor. Looking forward to another year of guitar and vocal lessons with this special company.

5. School of Rock

Website

Address: 1440 SE Hawthorne Blvd

Contact: (503) 231-2945 / [email protected]

Hours: Monday-Thursday, 2 PM – 9 PM | Friday, 2 PM – 8 PM | Saturday, 11.30 AM – 5 PM | Sunday, 11.30 AM – 8.30 PM

If solo scales are starting to feel a little lonely, School of Rock Portland brings the whole band into the picture. Its youth and adult programs pair weekly private lessons with regular group rehearsals.

Voice students work on breathing, posture, pitch, and technique while learning popular songs. They then get to sing alongside guitarists, drummers, bassists, and keyboard players before selected programs hit the stage.

The Method App helps keep practice moving between lessons, which is handy when motivation takes a coffee break.

Adults have their own performance track, while kids ages four to five can start with Little Wing’s games, rhythm activities, and instrument exploration.

The catch is that regular weekday hours begin in the afternoon, so morning lessons are limited.

Group rehearsals are also central to the flagship programs, making this less suitable for classical-only singers or anyone wanting strictly private coaching.

Pros

  • Private lessons plus band rehearsals
  • Regular live-performance opportunities
  • Dedicated programme for adults
  • Little Wing classes for ages four to five
  • Proprietary Method App
  • Teaches practical vocal fundamentals

Cons

  • Main programs not suitable for classical-only singers and anyone wanting strictly private coaching
  • Little Wing isn’t dedicated voice training
  • Primarily focused on popular music
  • No weekday morning lessons

Learning Teamwork and Rocking Out

My daughter enjoys Rock 101 as well as her private voice lessons with Rachel Fannan. Sometimes, other teachers fill in—All the teachers are skilled and make the kids laugh. My daughter’s also able to explore other instruments with ease and affordability (guitar, drums, keys). A fun environment to learn music in a meaningful way while learning to work as a team.

Taking His Natural Talent to the Next Level

This young man has been strumming guitar, singing, and drumming since he was 6 months old. We knew the next step was School of Rock. He comes home every day and grabs one of his guitars and sings and goes up and down the scales. While he did this before School of Rock, clearly his education with the SOR team is teaching him form, theory, and accuracy – he even holds the guitar more skillfully now. Thank you, School of Rock, for teaching Luke the way of having fun and being good at playing music. He will continue in Rookie’s class 🙂
