The 5 Best Golf Coaches in Portland to Fix Your Grip for the Next Swing

Instructor Credentials: We looked for coaches with solid Professional Golfers' Association (PGA) certifications or specialized training. Working with a verified expert ensures you get accurate and safe advice.

Technology Integration: Modern golf coaching relies heavily on data to fix swing mechanics. We favored instructors who use launch monitors and video analysis to track your actual progress.

Program Flexibility: Some players need a quick fix, while others want a long-term development plan. We checked if the coaches offer both drop-in lessons and comprehensive academy memberships.

Target Audience Fit: We made sure the instructors cater to different skill levels and ages. A great coach should be able to help a junior beginner just as well as a scratch golfer.

Value for Money: We weighed the cost of lessons against the quality of instruction and facilities provided. You should feel like your investment translates to lower scores on the course.

Hitting the links should be fun, but a nasty slice can easily ruin your weekend. If you want to stop losing balls on the golf course, you need to find the best golf coach in Portland to teach you the right techniques.

We’ve seen how the right instructor can completely transform a swing. Whether you’re a competitor looking for advanced video analysis or a beginner hoping to learn basic grip and posture, we’ve got you covered!

Let’s look at the local options to get your swing dialed in!

Address: 1034 SE 96th Ave

Contact: (503) 281-1842

Hours: Monday-Friday 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM | Saturday-Sunday 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

GOLFTEC is one of our picks because they skip the generic advice. Instead, they use a structured program combining game evaluations, custom coaching plans, and an app to track your digital progress.

Their custom club fitting services even use launch monitor data to optimize your shaft and distance. It’s highly analytical and great for players who love digging into the numbers.

When we checked out their indoor training bays, the climate-controlled setup stood out because it makes year-round practice a breeze.

But you have to commit to their specific lesson progression, which might frustrate anyone just looking for a casual, one-off tip.

And since everything happens indoors, you miss out on real-world turf interaction.

Pros

  • Includes personalized game evaluations
  • App tracks swing data and videos
  • Climate-controlled indoor bays
  • Offers custom club fitting

Cons

  • Requires structured lesson plans
  • No outdoor instruction

Patient coaching and great drills with Paul

I had a great experience with my lessons at GolfTec. My coach Paul was very knowledgeable. Patient and thorough. Paul was very helpful and easy to understand. He gave me drills to practice to improve my game each lesson.

Better tech, better feel, and lower scores!

Been taking lessons with GOLFTEC for a little over a month now and I must say the equipment is great and my coach McKay is even better. Explains not just what it should look like but feel like to your body as well. I feel so confident addressing the ball and my scores are showing that confidence as well.

The Golf Gym stands out by combining Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) coaching with golf-specific fitness training to improve your physical capabilities on the tee.

Working with a TPI-certified coach helps you see exactly how your physical limits cause those annoying swing faults. They function like a specialized personal trainer who cares about your scorecard.

Every single exercise in this facility is also built just for golfers, so you won’t find any generic bodybuilding templates here. The blend of swing mechanics and physical conditioning is even fantastic for serious players.

However, they don’t offer casual drop-in sessions. You must sign up for extensive 3-month, 6-month, or 12-month coaching packages, which demands a big time commitment.

  • TPI coaching
  • Golf-specific fitness training space
  • Addresses physical limitations
  • Combines lessons and workouts

Unlocking a smarter swing with Scott

Incredible experience!  Learning how to make your swing work smarter for you vs harder was a true unlock for me.  I know how to make my swing more efficient and I have a workout plan that will make the adjustments much easier!

Scott is an amazing coach to work with, he fundamentally understands an efficient golf swing and how to connect that back to a training plan.  He caters to whatever you want to achieve!

Fun, targeted workouts for golf fitness

Scott is a great coach and trainer. He listens to the areas you want to improve and designs the workouts/programs to work on improving those areas, as well as working on a full body workout. He keeps it fun, but also pushes you when things look easy. I would high recommend Scott to anyone who wants to improve strength, flexibility and mobility for golf.

Address: 2200 NE 71st Ave

Contact: (503) 253-4744

Hours: Monday-Sunday 6:30 AM – 7:00 PM

Rose City Golf Course employs PGA Professional Tom Hinton, who covers everything from your full swing and putting to actual on-course management. There are private and group lessons here, too.

We also love that they host fantastic summer camps for kids, letting young athletes build confidence on the greens.

From what we’ve seen, they really excel at teaching players of all abilities in a relaxed, low-pressure spot. A colleague who’s new to golf recently took their women’s golf clinic and loved the supportive, supervised practice sessions.

Just keep in mind that the junior programs only accept players between 8 and 17 years old.

Also, those popular women’s clinics are structured as multi-week sessions. You can’t just drop into a single class if you have a busy schedule.

Pros

  • PGA Professional instruction
  • Private and group lessons available
  • Dedicated women’s golf clinics
  • Junior golf camps offered

Cons

  • Women’s clinics lack drop-in options
  • Junior camps have strict age limits

No more chopping weeds thanks to Tom!

I take my lessons here from Tom Hinton. He is a great coach. He taught me how to play after 40 years of chopping weeds. The course is fine. I grew up not far from here so it will always be special.

4. Heron Lakes Golf Course

Website: https://portlandparksgolf.com/

Address: 3500 N. Victory Blvd

Contact: (503) 289-1818

Hours: Monday-Sunday 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM

Heron Lakes has something for everyone, with their multiple programs, from private lessons to adult clinics.

This spot is composed of two coaches, PGA Jason Basile and PGA Associate Christian Wolff. Since they have their own unique coaching skills, you can choose which of their teaching styles matches your learning pace.

You can also choose which one focuses purely on beginner basics or one who uses launch monitors for competitive player growth. They sometimes even weave video analysis and club fitting right into their curriculum.

But this setup means the lesson formats, pricing, and available tech vary wildly depending on which coach you book. So, you must do a bit of research before scheduling.

It’s also worth noting that their junior camps strictly cater to kids and teens aged 9 to 16, leaving younger children out.

Pros

  • Diverse team of PGA experts
  • Tailored individual and group lessons
  • Uses video and launch monitor tech
  • Multiple adult clinics available

Cons

  • Pricing varies widely by instructor
  • Junior programs restricted to ages 9-16

A Portland gem with top-notch teaching from Bill

Heron Blue is the gem of Portland city courses. Beautiful and well maintained. I’ve taken a few lessons from Bill and I can’t say enough good things about the guy. He’s skilled, friendly, and a great teacher of the game. Whether you are low handicapper or a beginner Bill can help you improve your game.

5. Glendoveer Golf & Tennis

Website: https://www.playglendoveer.com/

Address: 14015 NE Glisan St

Contact: (503) 253-7507

Hours: Monday-Sunday 6:30 AM – 6:30 PM

We like Glendoveer Golf & Tennis for offering unique Golf Academy lesson memberships alongside their normal coaching.

Under the guidance of Mitch Lowe, the Director of Instruction, they provide structured player development and supervised practice sessions. We love how this ongoing membership model forces you to stay committed to your goals.

Moreover, they employ a strong team of instructors capable of teaching complete novices up to collegiate athletes. You can easily pick a coach whose background fits your distinct needs here!

However, because they have a large staff, the teaching focus and overall availability heavily depend on the specific professional you choose.

Also, the academy memberships come with recurring monthly dues, making them a bad fit for anyone wanting just one or two quick pointers.

Pros

  • Team of PGA Professionals
  • Golf Academy memberships available
  • Multiple coaching formats offered
  • Suitable for novices to pros

Cons

  • Memberships require monthly dues
  • Coaching experience varies heavily by instructor
