Pros

  • Offers delivery and pickup
  • Has 24-hour roadside assistance
  • Offers custom seats
  • Provides online quotes
  • One-way rentals available

Cons

  • Some vans not coming with specified amenities
  • Some vans lacking maintenance

Bandago offers vans for rent that can fit 10–15 passengers. They’ve got cost-friendly options and some luxurious picks for you to choose from depending on your budget.

What we like most about them is how convenient it is to avail of their services, and you can set everything up from their website!

You can choose a vehicle from their website complete with all the costs and additional services like a full tank of gas upon pickup or insurance coverage. They also offer customizable seat options, but you’ll have to contact them for that.

Depending on which van you’ll be renting, some of their vans have entertainment options like a PlayStation 4, TV, and Wi-Fi. But the more amenities your van will have, the higher the price will go.

Once you get your rental, we encourage you to check if it has all the specified amenities because there were a few customers who reported that the vans didn’t come with the full amenities once they got them.

We’ve heard no complaints when it comes to cleanliness, but some did report that the vehicles weren’t as well-maintained, with one claiming that the van flashed the “Check engine” message during his trip.

We took a few points from them because of that, especially when your safety might be put at risk. However, they do have a 24-hour roadside assistance hotline, and they’re usually quick to pick up regardless of the time of day.

Overall, they’re a great pick for convenience, but we do suggest you check out your rental before you go drive off.

Pros

  • Wide range of vehicles available
  • Vehicles come with complete camping equipment
  • RVs and vans
  • Vehicles are clean
  • Good prices

Cons

  • Customer service will vary based on the vehicle’s owner
  • Hidden fees

GoCamp is the Airbnb for camper vans and RVs. It’s a peer-to-peer rental service, and all vehicles rented on its platform have private owners.

The advantage is that they have a wide range of vehicles available, and they even have some vintage vans that are hard to find elsewhere!

The vehicles may be privately owned, but GoCamp has strict rules on cleanliness and maintenance, so all of their vehicles are in great condition once it’s up for rent.

All of their vehicles also come with complete equipment you’ll need for your trip, such as kitchenware, pillows, sheets, towels, and even some camping items like lanterns and chairs!

However, their peer-to-peer rental service also has its disadvantages. First, the service you’ll receive will vary based on the vehicle’s owner, and some are more accommodating than others.

GoCamp does its best to mediate, but when you’re in the middle of your trip and you have a concern with your vehicle, the person you’ll reach out to would be the owner and not GoCamp staff.

While they offer a good insurance policy for both renters and owners, it’s likely you’ll find hidden fees if you rent from them. For example, if you’d like to avail of their 24-hour roadside assistance, you’ll have to shell out $15 per day!

There may also be some hidden charges that will only show up after you’ve used the vehicle, so while the initial price may be low, there’s a likelihood you’ll pay more than what you originally agreed to.

3. Escape Campervans

Pros

  • Complete camping equipment in vans
  • 24-hour roadside assistance
  • Easy pickup and return process
  • Van is custom-designed for camping
  • Offers discounts and sales

Cons

  • Limited vehicles
  • Has an estimated mileage charge
  • Complaints of cleanliness in vans
  • Has a minimum of 3 days for rentals

Escape Campervans is a great choice if you’re planning for a camping trip, especially since all their vans are equipped with all the things you’ll need for your trip.

They only have two kinds of vehicles available in their Portland location, and these vehicles are painted in bright colors to give them a distinct personality. If you’d like a more discreet vehicle, then your best option would be to look elsewhere.

They have no set prices for their rental rates, as they vary based on availability and the dates you’ll be renting. However, you can get a cheaper rate if you book way ahead of your trip and keep track of their occasional sales and discounts.

The main gripe we have with their costs is with their mileage charge, which is at $30 a day for every 100 miles for their Maverick van and $33 a day for their Big Sur vans. If you go over 100 miles a day, you’ll be charged more.

We’re also worried about some reports we heard about the cleanliness of their vans, with some customers reporting their vans had mice living in them! Fortunately, this seems to be an isolated incident and this wasn’t a common complaint.

Lastly, they have a minimum of three days for their rentals, and these tend to be pricier than if you were to book for a longer trip. So if your trip will be short, other options on this list may be a better pick.

4. Vagabond Vans

Pros

  • Low prices
  • Good customer service
  • Complete camping equipment in van
  • Comfortable van interior
  • Free 150 miles per day

Cons

  • No one-way rentals
  • Renter is responsible for cleaning the van
  • Limited range of vehicles
  • Must return the van with the same amount of fuel

Vagabond Vans is one of the best options if you’re on a tight budget. Their vans come with no frills, but it does have the basics you’ll need for your trip.

Their vans don’t look anything special from the outside, but inside you’ll find a mattress, a propane stove, five gallons of water, camping chairs, kitchenware, and cookware.

They don’t have spacious vans to fit large parties, and their largest van is their Ford E-150, which can fit four people. It might be a little cramped, but it’s easy to get comfortable if you set your things properly.

Regardless of which vehicle you get and the length of your trip, the rates don’t reach $100 a night! You’ll also get 150 miles per day on your vehicle, and you’ll be charged $0.25 a mile if you go beyond that.

Of course, the low price comes with some drawbacks. The first is that they don’t offer one-way rentals, and you’ll have to pick up and drop off your rental in their location, but this shouldn’t be a problem if you’re a Portland local.

You’re responsible for the van’s cleanup, and you have to return the van to the same level of cleanliness as when you checked it out. Otherwise, you’ll be charged a cleaning fee.

You’ll also have to return the van with the same amount of fuel recorded at the time of pickup, which we think is a bit much. This is entirely up to you, of course, but failure to follow this will result in additional fuel charges to your account.

Pros

  • Great customer service
  • Understanding of budget concerns

Cons

  • Not ideal for camping trips
  • No online booking platform

Crown Auto Rental is a car rental business that’s been open since 1985, and they were acquired by new owners Steve and Norma in 2001. They’ve had a regular customer base since then.

They don’t focus on vans and have a large fleet of cars that are available for rent. For the vans they do have, they have vehicles that can fit up to 15 passengers and even offer a tow package should you need it.

They may not be ideal for camping, as the vehicles aren’t modified to fit mattresses and equipment, but it’s good for a long trip or a special event.

You’re free to choose which vehicle will best fit your needs, but you’ll have to go to their location for that.

Their website doesn’t offer much, and you can’t find a complete list of their available vehicles unless you personally visit them or give them a call.

However, their customer service is of excellent quality, and it’s usually the owners, Steve and Norma, who get back to you. The service they offer is personalized, and they can even help you come up with a payment plan if you need it.

They’re also helpful if you have extra requests for the vehicle you’ll be renting, but as we said, it’s best if you visit them personally for you to be able to check out the vehicle you plan to rent out.

Lastly, all of their vehicles are clean and well-maintained, which gives us the confidence to recommend them to you.
