Pros
- Pioneering roastery and cafe in the area
- Delivery available
- Bottled coffee and bagged roasts available nationwide
Cons
- On the expensive side
- Roasts can be strong
Stumptown is famous for being one of the pioneering roasters in Portland. They source, roast, and deliver their own beans and ready-to-drink brews to their five locations and many other shops serving their roasts.
We love that every purchase with Stumptown means you’re supporting a transparent supply chain that provides living wages to their Direct Trade partners.
They’re also an early innovator in nitro cold brew and serve their roasts as espresso drinks or brewed with a Chemex. Whatever way you best enjoy your coffee, you can get that with Stumptown.
Each of their five cafes is widely praised for its cute and clean interior plus excellent service from friendly and accommodating staff.
They offer specialty drinks and a wide range of options to match your taste.
Not sure what to get? Ask their baristas or take the quiz on their site to find your match.
Although, if you prefer your roasts on the lighter side, you can find that their coffee can be too strong for your liking.
Some customers also say they find prices to be more on the expensive side. For example, a latte that’s $2.95 in larger chains starts at $4 at Stumptown.
Stumptown’s roasts are also available in other coffee shops they supply to, and you can take your experience home by buying in-store or ordering from their site.
2. Coava Coffee Roasters

Pros
- Delivery and takeout available
- Multiple payment options
- Outdoor seating available
Cons
- Only one serving size
- Not good for working
Coava started in 2008 in founder Matt Higgins’ garage. The cafe opened in 2010 to serve as a “tasting room” for its roastery and has since captured the hearts of coffee lovers in Portland and visitors too.
That being said, it also means their cafe isn’t really a place where you can sit and get some work done. Those who love working at coffee shops won’t get to do that here.
For the coffee experience, you won’t be disappointed. Coava keeps its menu simple.
Each day, they offer two roasts for both hand-poured coffee and their espresso-based drinks. Customers can then choose one of five preparations: coffee, espresso, macchiato, cappuccino, and latte, iced or hot.
Those who don’t consume dairy will be happy to hear they offer oat and almond milk as alternatives.
Drinks are only available in 10-oz servings. This makes decision-making simple for customers and speeds up serving time—which Coava customers love.
However, this may not be great news for those who prefer larger-sized drinks.
We like that you can come in daily and enjoy something new every time, as their efficient menu design allows them to rotate through their many different roasts
Their drinks are well-made, the pastries delicious, and customers love the industrial vibe of their main location. You can ask their baristas anything, and they’ll answer thoroughly without hesitation.
You can buy their beans and merch in-store and online—and even get a drink free when you buy a bag of their roasts at the cafe.
3. Heart Coffee Roasters
Specialties: Coffee and Tea, Coffee Roastery
Address: 2211 E Burnside Portland, OR 97205

Pros
- Outdoor and limited indoor seating available
- Good for kids and groups and for working
Cons
- A bit on the pricier side
- Limited options for nondairy milk
Heart Roasters opened in 2009 with the mission to highlight the distinct fruit flavors in coffee. They opened three locations, but their Westside cafe has closed indefinitely.
If you prefer to sit and enjoy your coffee, indoor seating is currently limited, but outdoor seating is also available.
Heart also shows Portland’s dedication to high-quality ingredients and its crafts. They source their coffee through direct relationships that provide stability to their coffee growers.
Roasts, equipment, and merch are available online, and they also offer wholesale.
Another feature we love about Heart is their cafes are both wide open and welcoming. It’s a great place to go whether you’re working by yourself or with a group or even passing the time with your kids.
Their menu is very straightforward, only 10 items short, with a choice of one dairy and one nondairy milk. Customers with strict preferences aren’t pleased with the limited milk options, which are oat milk or their in-house walnut-almond milk.
In any case, if you want something simple, Heart can offer you just that.
While patrons rave over the quality of their drinks, we have spoken to a handful of customers who said their orders were too bitter or too acidic, to the point their milk of choice curdled.
4. Good Coffee

Pros
- Cool interior with plenty seats
- Expansive menu with unique seasonal flavors
- Multiple milk alternatives
Cons
- A bit expensive
- Closes early
Good Coffee lives up to its name. Good opened in 2014 and started roasting its own coffees a few years ago to keep up with Portland’s bustling coffee scene.
They sell their proprietary roasts in different sizes and also offer several subscription bundles.
The menu features unique flavors which they rotate every season as well as classic espresso-based brews.
If you’re looking for a place to sit and enjoy your cup of coffee or grab one on the go, visit Good Coffee. They also have a great playlist customers love, adding to the stylish, hip decor.
However, you may want to come early. Store hours are pretty short, as they close as early as 2 PM.
Good Coffee doesn’t only offer good coffee. They also curate pastries, drinks, and goods from around Portland for you to choose from.
The baristas are very friendly and good at their job too. The drinks are well-made, and they keep the cafe clean and comfortable.
If you have questions, they’ll happily share their coffee knowledge.
As they say, quality does come with a price. Some customers find the menu to be more expensive than your local coffee chain.
5. Proud Mary
Specialties: Coffee and Tea, Breakfast and Brunch, Juice Bar and Smoothies
Address: 2012 NE Alberta St Portland, OR 97211

Pros
- Good coffee and good food
- Super friendly staff
Cons
- High prices
- Long wait when busy
Among the entries on this list, Proud Mary is the best place to enjoy food with your coffee. The kitchen is open until 3 PM, and the cafe closes at 4 PM.
While Proud Mary had its humble beginnings in Melbourne, Australia, in 2009, the Portland cafe has taken root in the community and the hearts of the locals.
They have a large menu featuring an assortment of breakfast foods, baked goods, coffee drinks, teas, and other beverages as well as whole bean coffee and merch.
Like all the establishments in this list, they believe in a sustainable, transparent supply chain.
Customers love the cafe’s great, unique decor. They also get lots of love for their super friendly staff, although some needs can be unattended when it gets busy.
If you’re lucky there will be almost no wait, but service can get slow when the place is full.
The quality of food and coffee is high but so are the prices. Their coffee, for example, ranges from $10–$12 a cup.
Nevertheless, there’s love for Proud Mary as a coffee and food experience. It’s become a must-visit destination in Portland, and there’s a high number of people saying they’d come back.

Pros
- Donates to causes when their products are purchased
- Good coffee
- Friendly baristas and staff
Cons
- Doesn’t serve food
Green Bridge Coffee began as a drive-thru coffee stand in Portland, Oregon in 2017. They later opened a cafe and a monthly coffee subscription service.
They’re no ordinary cafe. What we like about them is how they also create an impact with their Community Blend Promise of donating 10% of every whole bean bag of coffee, online subscription, and drip coffee at their café to a rotating list of causes.
At Green Bridge Coffee, you don’t simply enjoy a great cup of coffee, but you get to help others too!
We can admit that we love their coffee here. When it comes to their taste and design, they know exactly what their customers would want.
The baristas here are also the friendliest we’ve come across, and their staff is passionate about coffee.
The only downside to this cafe is that they don’t serve food, but they do have baked goods. What’s nice is that they will kindly direct you to great places to get food in the area.
We’re fans of Green Bridge Coffee and we think you will be too!

Pros
- Open daily
- Serves old school coffee
- Great prices
- Pet-friendly
Cons
- Complaints about rude staff
- No reservations allowed
Fuller’s Coffee Shop has been around since 1947, and they’ve been standing tall for this long for a reason.
They’re located in in the heart of the Pearl District downtown Portland and is a neighborhood favorite.
If you’re looking for a place to experience a breakfast and lunch American diner that serves cheap eats, milkshakes and good old coffee, we think this is the place for you!
We think their menu, while simple, is pretty great and their food is divine!
We also love how their coffee is old school, so you won’t be seeing espresso machines there. It’s a different experience and we’re all for it.
The prices are great for what you get. Definitely worth every penny.
If you have pets, you’d be happy to hear that they’re a pet-friendly place.
Based on our experience and of the majority, their staff is pretty amazing. However, we’ve heard about unfortunate experiences of others about rude encounters with them.
Another thing to note is that they don’t take reservations, so we hope you get to go at a good time where you’ll be able to find seating.

Cons

Happy Cup Coffee Bar is a specialty coffee roaster in NE Portland.
There are many things to like about them, but our favorite one isn’t even their coffee. It’s the fact that they offer employment to adults with disabilities in their local community.
Of course, there’s their coffee too. They do deliver a responsible, great-tasting cup of coffee here.
We stumbled upon this place and absolutely loved it. Their coffee is delicious, the place has a very chill atmosphere, and their baristas and staff are the friendliest we’ve seen!
We like that they have a creative menu with lots of options. We think that there’s something for everyone here.
It’s also a perfect place for those who want to work. They have WiFi and outlets!
We love it here and we highly recommend.

Fairlane Coffee is a specialty coffee shop owned by a group of individuals who are dedicated to delivering an elevated and quality experience for their customers.
They’ve partnered to become an exclusive West Coast Onyx Coffee distributor, so we think they offer the best tasting and ethically sourced beans to the NW.
We like their specialty coffee and the interesting flavors they have! We think they really know about coffee, for sure.
We love going her to grab our daily coffee because of the great atmosphere and ambiance of the place. If you love natural light in a coffee shop, then this is the place to go!
It isn’t only their coffee that tastes divine, but so do their food and pastries.
It’s also such a great plus for us that their staff is amazing and make us feel so welcome.
Our only comment would be that they close relatively early since they’re only until 4PM. Save for this, we love the place and we recommend going here.

Pros
- Artistic Atmosphere
- Community Engagement
- Family-Friendly Environment
Cons
- Slightly limited operating hours
- Limited Coffee Knowledge Mentioned
Awake Coffee & Art, situated in the vibrant city of Portland, is not just a coffee shop but a haven where fabulously fresh coffee meets a tapestry of artistic inspiration.
We like that Awake Coffee & Art goes beyond the conventional coffee shop ambiance.
The vibrant and colorful setting, coupled with an emphasis on art, creates a unique and inviting atmosphere. It’s a space where creativity flourishes, providing a comfortable haven for art enthusiasts and coffee lovers alike.
The coffee shop actively engages with the community through themed craft days, art workshops for kids, and community trade classes, which we think is great.
This commitment to community involvement fosters a sense of belonging and makes Awake more than just a coffee destination—it becomes a community hub.
We like their family-friendly environment. With regular children’s art projects, storytime, a dedicated play area, and even vegan treats, the coffee shop caters to families, making it a welcoming space for parents and children alike.
While the reviews praise the overall atmosphere and offerings of Awake, there’s limited mention of specific details about the coffee itself. A more detailed exploration of the coffee flavors, brew methods, and bean origins could provide a more comprehensive coffee review.
