Pros

  • Comprehensive selection of plants
  • Offers alternative payment options
  • They do live sessions online

Cons

  • No free consultation
  • High service cost

Established in 1907, Portland Nursery has built their credibility on decades of experience in nursery and gardening.

We believe this experience is shown in the comprehensive collection of plants they offer. These include Pacific Northwest natives, fruit trees, vines, grasses, and houseplants.

We like that Portland Nursery provides their clients information that will help them tend to the overall health of their plants.

This is especially helpful for first-time clients who are just starting their gardening adventure

Another feature that we love about them is their custom planting plans. This feature allows their clients to create personalized planting plans based on a consultation with their in-house gardening expert.

Under this option, they come up with plant combinations that fit your garden and aesthetic preference.

We appreciate that this feature is even backed by a digital and print copy of the customized planting plan including some maintenance notes.

This makes a great reference that clients can go back to every time they feel a little overwhelmed with gardening.

Simply put, clients can get all their gardening needs met with their custom planting plans—from consultation to plant selection and down to the installation in their gardens.

This is perfect for clients who might not have the time and, maybe, the patience to come up with their dream landscapes.

We also appreciate that they offer alternative payment options through credit cards, Apple Pay, and Android Pay. This gives their clients both accessibility and stress-free transactions.

However, we don’t like that they don’t offer free consultations. Clients may also incur additional redesign fees in case the first site measurements are inaccurate or clients simply want to make some changes to their site.

Pros

  • Locally sourced plant products
  • Women-owned
  • Accepts credit card

Cons

  • Doesn’t offer national and international shipping

Birds & Bees Nursery is the best choice for those who are working on indoor and outdoor urban gardening.

We love that this women-owned nursery specializes in locally sourced and sustainable products for indoor and urban gardeners.

Although they have a relatively small shop compared to others, they offer a load of selection for native Northwest plants, soil, tools, and terrarium supplies.

In fact, they’ve built their very own houseplant greenhouse. Using a greenhouse is a good technique to grow houseplants, as they afford greater control of external factors that can affect plant health.

Next, we appreciate that they also make their own pots and macrame. We love that their designs are so chic and stylish.

This is especially appealing to plant parents who are also fond of dressing their babies with unique plant holders.

In terms of client service, we appreciate that they follow their own COVID-19 health protocol.

We love that they also offer pickup orders for plant enthusiasts with compromised immune systems.

This is especially beneficial for clients who are uncomfortable shopping in person and prefer to stay in and shop at home.

However, they don’t offer any national and international shipping options, which can be a bummer for clients outside of Portland.

Pros

  • Offers traditional nursery gardening
  • Years of experience

Cons

  • No longer accepting large-scale projects for their design services

Having been established in 2002, this nursery boasts a wealth of experience in gardening and landscaping. With this experience, they can definitely provide clients effective traditional gardening techniques.

We believe their experience is also shown in the comprehensive selection of plants they offer.

These include boxwood, witty topiary, format specimens for indoor and outdoor, textural plants, and architectural objects.

We appreciate that they also offer a variety of conifers, succulents, natives, and perennials.

This can be exciting, particularly for plant collectors who are always looking for uncommon house plants.

On top of these, they’re also known for their creative landscape design services.

They cover garden design, landscape installation as well as pruning, and other garden upkeep needs.

Although recently, they’ve stopped accepting large-scale design projects, which is unfortunate for clients with bigger gardens or yards.

Adding to their scope of services, we also love that they offer retail of plant pots in varying shapes and sizes. They also provide a selection of classic and contemporary patio furnishings at a reasonable price point.

This is especially beneficial for commercial clients who need to make wholesale purchases of plants and accessories for their own businesses.

Pros

  • Offers a wide selection of plants
  • Accepts credit cards

Cons

  • Caters only to small-scale gardening
  • Relatively high price on plants and services

Having been established in the 1930s, Marbott’s Greenhouse & Nursery is one of the most established nurseries in our list.

With eight greenhouses on-site, this family-owned and operated nursery grows over 90% of its plants on-site through effective seeding and propagation.

They specialize in perennials, annuals, herbs, vegetables, shrubs, small trees as well as indoor houseplants, rockery plants, and gardening supplies.

We think this wide selection of plants and gardening tools make them an excellent choice for clients who plan to make gardening their regular activity.

With their complete and consistent selection, they make a stable supplier for serious gardeners.

We also want to highlight their excellent client service.

First, we love that they provide their clients the option to purchase plants online.

All the clients have to do is simply fill out an order form, and once their purchase has been verified, they can go ahead and pick up their plants.

This is perfect for clients who don’t have the time to bring themselves to a nursery and choose their plants in person. This makes their services both flexible and accessible.

Next, the nursery is staffed by knowledgeable and accommodating people.

Having been in business for decades, they know every plant like the back of their hands, and we love that they’re kind enough to answer their clients’ questions.

However, we do have to note that they charge higher rates in comparison to other nurseries. They also presently don’t offer any financing or payment options to their clients.

Pros

  • Accepts credit cards
  • Affordable price

Cons

  • Slow shipping process

In our opinion, Tony’s Garden Center makes the best choice for clients who want to manage their costs efficiently.

We love that they offer financial relief to their clients, and they do this in two ways.

First, they offer the most affordable pricing for houseplants compared to other nurseries.

Through our research, we found that they give a break price of $3.75 per plant for ground plants, which usually costs $4.49 per plant.

This especially benefits clients who like to purchase ground plants in bulk for their gardens and yards.

Second, they also offer alternative payment options to their clients. We appreciate that they provide easy and cashless transactions.

Clients can pay by cash, credit, debit, and online through PayPal.

We also appreciate that clients can avail of special deals and gift cards with their services.

Moreover, we think it’s noteworthy that they contribute to several fundraising programs.

In fact, they’ve been supporting local organizations for over 30 years with fundraising programs for schools, churches, gardening clubs, and other local organizations.

However, we don’t like that their shipping can be slow. This doesn’t help clients who are in need of plants and gardening supplies urgently.

In any case, if you want to save big and support local organizations, all while purchasing new plants, then Tony’s Garden Center is the choice for you.

Pros

  • Diversely experienced staff in the industry
  • Excellent plant and flower variations offered
  • Sustainable and quality plants delivered

Cons

  • Slightly pricey

Al’s Garden & Home is a family-owned and operated store that offers its clients an excellent variety of plants, trees, and shrubs perfect for both indoor and outdoor spaces. Established back in 1948, they have since then consistently offered over 75 years of experience in the field with every plant and client they handle.

From houseplants to conversational pieces, we like that they offer clients a wide range of plants and varying styles that is ideal when it comes to decorating various homes to reflect lifestyles as well.

Furthermore, not only do they offer variation when it comes to the presentation but also that the kinds of plants that they offer are both extensive and exotic to ensure that clients get quality and fresh plants every day.

Note though that some of their plants are only limited per season which clients can inquire with them first should they have a specific plant in mind to avail of.

Overall, with their experienced and professional team of staff, quality and stellar plant selections, and assistive customer service, we highly recommend them to clients in the area looking for such products.
