Pros
- Caring doctor
- Cooperates with patients in medical decisions
- Kind front desk staff
- Good listener
- Good record of patient loyalty
Cons
- Currently not taking in new patients
- Turns away late patients
- Doesn’t take Medicaid
With over 20 years of experience, Dr. Mollie Thompson has built a reputation as a reliable doctor.
Most of her patients see her for arthritis, limb swelling, and osteoporosis. But knowing her long years of experience, we’re confident that she can also handle other rheumatic conditions.
Her clinic setup makes treatment convenient for patients. Her laboratory and infusion room are all in one place, so if you need bloodwork done or IV infusions, you won’t have to make additional trips.
What left a mark on us about Dr. Thompson is her empathy for her patients. Most of them had already seen other doctors but felt she was the only one who understood them and empathized with their pain.
If you’re someone who experiences chronic pain, you’ll want a compassionate doctor with whom you’ll be comfortable spending time in treatment. Dr. Thompson has an excellent record of patient loyalty, with most of them staying for years under her care.
We’ve found her clinic staff to be friendly and helpful, but we don’t like how they turn away patients for coming in even a few minutes late. This may be because of Dr. Thompson’s full schedule, but we think there are better ways to handle that situation.
Other than that, we do believe that Dr. Mollie Thompson is a competent and attentive rheumatologist. But if your needs are urgent, we suggest you look at the other options on this list instead.

Pros
- Thorough and attentive doctor
- Honest in evaluation
- Accepts 22 insurance plans
- Quick to set appointments
Cons
- Currently by referral only
- Complaints about the receptionist
- Few patients felt he was too frank
With a great understanding of rheumatological conditions and autoimmune diseases, Dr. Barkhuizen can diagnose his patients thoroughly. He also works with non-rheumatic diseases and uses this knowledge to give you the best care.
His vast knowledge allows him to answer patients’ questions well. The patients we’ve spoken to said that during appointments, he takes the time to attend to their concerns and ensure they understand what’s happening.
Another thing patients admire about him is his honesty. Dr. Barkhuizen doesn’t give his patients false hope but instead gives them realistic expectations on managing their conditions.
His patients also felt involved in every decision regarding their treatment. This makes him a good choice if you’re someone who doesn’t want to feel pressured into medical treatments or tests.
Patients also commended the nurses in his clinic for being kind and compassionate, but there were complaints about their receptionist. They found the receptionist to be cold and aloof, which put them off.
There were also a few patients who weren’t satisfied with his care. They thought he was a bit too frank and disagreed with some things he said during their appointments.
These complaints, however, are only very few and don’t represent the majority. Most of the patients we’ve spoken to were overall pleased with his approach and treatment, which is why he has a spot on our list.
If you’ve decided that you want to see Dr. Barkhuizen, he currently only takes new patients by referral. Your best chance to talk to him is after a referral from your physician. If that isn’t available to you, please look at the others on this list.

Pros
- Good bedside manner
- Good record of patient loyalty
- Accepts new patients
- Accepts Medicare and Medicaid
- Also specializes in allergy and immunology
- Friendly clinic staff
Cons
- Doesn’t do frequent follow-ups
Dr. Wai Lee tops this list when it comes to a good record of patient loyalty. A couple of the patients we’ve spoken to have said they’ve been under his care for more than 10 years!
It didn’t take us long to realize why. Dr. Lee has subspecialties in arthritis and spondyloarthropathy and specializations in allergy and immunology.
That allows him to have a broad understanding of how different diseases can interact with each other. In fact, most of the patients we’ve spoken to have said he’s the best doctor they’ve ever seen for their concerns.
Dr. Lee is also unafraid to take on more complicated diseases. He doesn’t shy away from the possible complexity but instead does his best to ensure each patient gets the best care.
Patients feel comfortable with him and commend his demeanor toward them. He listens to questions patiently, gives complete answers, and looks at your whole medical history to know the best options for you.
He’s generous with his time in appointments, allowing you to take your time to explain your concerns. Not only that, we found that he also has a remarkable memory of each of his patients.
If there’s one thing we have hesitations on, it’s how he doesn’t initiate follow-ups but instead leaves that responsibility to his patients.
However, none of the patients we’ve spoken to thought this was a problem, as they were eager to set follow-up appointments anyway.
Overall, we believe Dr. Wai Lee is a good choice for those looking for a compassionate doctor dedicated to giving you the best care for your needs.

Pros
- Good communicator
- Observant doctor
- Conservative approach
- Makes thorough assessments
- Accepts new patients
- Accepts 24 insurance plans
Cons
- Some patients thought additional tests to be unnecessary
- Some instances of late and rescheduled appointments
Dr. Kevin Khaw first caught our attention when we heard how patients admired his calm demeanor. Those who were once anxious about seeing a doctor were quickly put at ease under his care.
This makes Dr. Khaw a good fit for those who have initial hesitations about seeing a rheumatologist for the first time. Not only that, he’s very observant and pays attention to everything that could affect your condition.
He prefers to be more conservative when it comes to diagnosing patients, which can mean more tests on your end. There have been patients of his who found this to be unnecessary and costly, but also some found it useful.
Dr. Khaw is also able to adjust to his patients’ preferences when it comes to medication. For example, if you prefer less medication, Dr. Khaw will adjust your treatment plan by suggesting lifestyle changes or giving you other options.
The one thing that worries us about Dr. Khaw is complaints of his tardiness and rescheduled appointments. One patient we’ve spoken to said they waited for over two hours, and another said their appointment was rescheduled without prior notice.
But this doesn’t seem to stop new patients from coming into his clinic. While they were irritated by the tardiness and rescheduled appointments, they also said his level of care made up for it.
Given that, if you plan to have a checkup with him, we suggest you give his office a call before you get on your way.

Pros
- Accepts Medicare and Medicaid
- Accepts new patients
- Compassionate doctor
- Helpful office staff
- Good communicator
- Thorough assessments
Cons
- Long waiting time for appointments
Dr. Katja Daoud has over 25 years of experience in the medical field, and she’s used this to hone her approach toward patients. As a result, we didn’t hear complaints about her bedside manner at all!
Most patients see her for osteoporosis, but those who saw her for other conditions also said they were well taken care of. She asks patients relevant questions to give them the correct diagnosis and routinely checks on how they’re doing.
We’ve heard many of her patients describe her as kind, which leaves us no room for doubt that your overall health and wellbeing are her top priorities.
In addition, patients felt she gave them enough time and attention during their appointments or hospitalizations.
She has a holistic approach to her treatment, listening to her patients’ concerns beyond their rheumatological needs. She looks at the other factors in your life affecting your health and is cooperative when working with your other physicians.
We were also impressed by how well-prepared and organized Dr. Daoud is. She’s always ready for each appointment, having already gone through the patient’s records before they come into the room.
Her approach to treatment makes her patients feel important and understood. All the patients we’ve spoken to felt that they received good care from her and didn’t need to look for another doctor.
You’ll be relieved to know that she takes new patients, but you will have to wait. It may take you a few weeks before you get your appointment, but if that’s no problem for you, she’s definitely worth the wait.
