I recently checked out Brooke Totman Acting School in Portland, and it’s definitely a standout choice for anyone serious about acting.

What sets it apart is Brooke’s impressive background. She’s been on shows like MadTV and Portlandia, bringing that real-world experience into her teaching.

The school offers classes for beginners and advanced students. They also offer specialized workshops like audition prep, allowing you to tailor your learning experience.

Plus, there’s a strong emphasis on comedy and improv, thanks to Brooke’s background in sketch comedy. This really spices up the curriculum and sets it apart from the others.

However, class availability can be a bit limited, especially for advanced students. The cost is also more expensive compared to other local schools.

But if you’re looking for top-notch training and a focus on comedy, this school is definitely worth considering.

Pros

  • Industry expertise
  • Tailored learning
  • Focus on comedy and improv

Cons

  • Limited class availability
  • Higher cost

Fantastic and approachable teacher

I had so much fun in Brooke’s class! She’s a fantastic teacher who makes acting fun, easy and approachable. I would highly recommend her classes to anyone interested in learning acting or even in just getting more comfortable speaking in front of people.”

If you want to be a better actor, Take Brooke Totman’s class

“If you’re interested in becoming a better actor, take Brooke Totman’s class. I took her advanced class, and it immediately paid dividends. I became more confident as an actor — broadening my range and discovering more dynamic and interesting ways of how to play a scene or shape a character. The feedback that Brooke gives is on-the-nose helpful. I also got to work with excellent actors who wanted the same thing I did — to become better actors.”

I also had the chance to try out The Studio NW last year. They focus on the Meisner technique, which emphasizes genuine emotional responses and interaction between actors. This sets them apart from the usual acting schools.

The studio’s curriculum is pretty broad, covering not just acting but also the business side of things—film, TV, commercials, you name it. It’s a great way to get ready for all aspects of the industry.

What I really liked was the supportive environment where you can connect with other actors and feel part of a team. They even have acting classes for kids and teens.

The instructors are experienced pros who offer up-to-date industry insights. Plus, the studio promotes a balanced approach to both personal and professional growth.

Some students, though, have faced issues with communication and class enrollment. A few experienced unexpected removals from classes, which caused frustration. Plus, finding a spot in advanced classes can be challenging.

Pros

  • Meisner technique focus
  • Comprehensive curriculum
  • Supportive community
  • Offers acting classes for kids and teens
  • Experienced instructors
  • Balanced approach

Cons

  • Communication issues
  • Limited class availability

The classes are super engaging and fun

My daughters (ages 10 and 12) have been having an excellent experience doing acting classes at The Studio NW. The teacher makes the classes super engaging and fun. Every time they finish with class, they exude positive energy and confidence. I highly recommend them. I’m now inspired to take their classes for adults!”

If you’re looking for an acting school that heavily focuses on on-camera work, then dive into Ted Rooney Film Acting classes. With Ted’s extensive experience as an on-camera actor, you’re learning from someone who truly knows the ropes.

One of the standout features is how Ted tailors the classes to your skill level. Whether you’re a newbie or more advanced, he meets you where you’re at. This personalized approach really helps you develop your own acting style.

I also love how the environment in the classes is super supportive. Ted fosters a space where you can be honest and expressive without worrying about judgment.

The range of classes is also impressive—whether you’re into foundational training, scene study, or advanced character work, there’s something for everyone.

However, the number of advanced classes can be limited. This can make it tricky to keep progressing.

Pros

  • Expert instruction
  • Tailored learning
  • Supportive environment
  • Offers a variety of classes

Cons

  • Limited advanced classes

Best acting class experience ever!

“Best experience ever! After taking Ted’s On-Camera I and II, I’m learning the better ways to be a great actor for the camera and gaining confidence all thanks to Ted’s coaching. He makes his class fun and enjoyable. He motivates all of his students to succeed. I highly recommend taking his class. Ted is an amazing actor/teacher/coach. Again, best experience ever!”

My daughter attended acting classes at Portland Acting For Kids & Teens, and it’s definitely a standout choice for young actors in Portland!

The instructors are all working actors, so the insights and advice they offer come straight from real industry experience. It’s clear these pros know their stuff and can give students a true taste of what acting in the real world is like.

The atmosphere at the studio is super supportive. It feels like a nurturing space where kids are celebrated and encouraged to explore their creativity.

The curriculum is pretty comprehensive too. It covers everything from basic acting classes to voiceover lessons and private coaching.

What I loved the most was how my daughter got to perform in showcases for industry professionals. These types of showcases can open doors to professional representation and real-world acting gigs.

That said, there are a couple of downsides. Finding spots in advanced classes can be tough. Also, while the studio is mostly supportive, my daughter has felt some of the competitive edge of the industry creeping in.

Pros

  • Experienced instructors
  • Supportive atmosphere
  • Comprehensive curriculum
  • Professional opportunities

Cons

  • Limited advanced class availability
  • Possibility to experience competitive edge

Best acting studio for kids

The best acting studio for kids! My 8 yr old daughter loves going to class. The coaches and staff at AFKT are all super friendly and professional and fun, and the confidence, skills, and sense of community that they foster and that the kids build, is remarkable.”

Such a fun, loving, safe space for children and teens

“Acting for Kids & Teens is a true gem!  It provides a fun, loving, safe space for your children and teens to connect with other like minded  individuals and learn to express their creativity.    Katie and all of the coaches have a real gift for connecting with children and getting them out of their comfort zone to help them grow in confidence.  My daughter has had an amazing experience with this studio and I would highly recommend it to others who are considering the studio!”

My friend enrolled at Vision8Studio – Acting Classes + Film Production and said they mix acting classes with film production training.

She got hands-on experience not just in front of the camera but also with the technical side of filmmaking. It’s a great way to get a full-picture understanding of the industry.

She was so thrilled with the range of classes they offer—everything from acting for film and TV to screenwriting and self-taped auditions. She could tailor her learning to what interests her the most.

The personalized coaching they provide is another big plus. The instructors give tailored feedback based on your goals, which really helps you hone your craft. Plus, the studio is set up like a real film set, giving you an authentic experience that’s hard to beat.

One of the highlights is the career development support. They help with headshots, website creation, and demo reels, which is awesome for building your professional portfolio.

On the downside, class sizes can be larger than expected, which might limit the amount of personal attention you get.

Pros

  • Integrated training
  • Diverse course offerings
  • Personalized coaching
  • Offers hands-on practical experience
  • Supports career development

Cons

  • Large class sizes
  • High cost

Instructors have the utmost professionalism and diplomacy

I have now taken several classes at Vision8 Studios and am signed up for two more!  All of their instructors have vetted experience, the space is comfortable and Tristan handled the one problem I did encounter with the utmost professionalism and diplomacy.  So very helpful to have this level and diversity of training in one place!!”

Professional set up and great coaching

“I recently had an audition and needed a reader and someone who know what they were doing with lighting and the camera.  I scheduled a time with Tristan and I’m so glad I did!!!! He had a very professional set up and gave me some great coaching on my performance.  2 days later I was booked for the job!!! I highly recommend getting your audition taped at his studio, he took the stress out of self taping!”
