Pros
- Over 60 years of experience
- Awnings for commercial and residential clients
- Offers a variety of awning styles
- Awning graphics available
- Exceptional workmanship
- Reasonable pricing
Cons
- Difficult to contact
- Claims of slow estimates
- Lack of information regarding prices and warranty
Rose City Awning & FlagCity Awning and Flag has been a leader in the awning and shade market in Portland since 1954. Throughout these years, they’ve been helping customers extend their living spaces to the great outdoors.
They’re quite a big deal in this industry since they can provide awnings for both commercial and residential spaces. Although looking at their portfolio, they usually have clients looking for awnings for their business spaces.
Clients were impressed by the variety of awning styles available: drop screen, retractable, open-ended, traditional pipe frame, and so on. Not only can they choose the design (or have it customized), but they can also choose the kind of fabric to use.
Speaking of customization, commercial customers can have their awnings branded with logos or other graphics. This one gets our vote, and we believe it could be an excellent business advertising strategy.
We’ve also heard about their exceptional workmanship from start to finish. However, there were some complaints about how difficult it was to contact them in the first place, as well as their slow response when asked for an estimate.
Despite providing excellent awning service, we find their lack of transparency regarding pricing and warranty issues to be a turn-off. It’s a good thing that most of their clients claimed to have been charged reasonable prices, so that’s enough – at least for now.

Pros
- Wide selection of awnings available
- Installs door and window awnings
- Awnings accommodate today’s architectural designs
- Limited lifetime warranty
- Five-year labor warranty
- Free estimates
Cons
- Minor inconsistencies with commitment
- Doesn’t always meet clients in need of awnings
The wide selection of awnings available at May Awning & Patio Co is what we loved the most. They could provide clients with awnings for doors and windows that are all professionally engineered to meet their local building codes.
Looking at the reviews, we can’t help but notice that they’re more known for their patio cover services, and that’s quite alright. However, this led us to believe that their ‘awnings game’ isn’t as solid as their other specialty.
Regardless, our evaluation of their awning service met our expectations. They have a wide range of design styles and colors to choose from, each with a unique look and function that can accommodate many of today’s architectural designs.
Their awnings all come with a limited lifetime warranty and a five-year labor warranty, providing clients with year-round protection. But even so, we are reassured by the quality of their work in the first place, as their clients attest to the durability and functionality of their awnings.
We also discovered a minor flaw, mostly about minor inconsistencies with commitment. Some of the reviews expressed dissatisfaction with how their staff backed out when there was a difficulty in a situation, which, honestly, is very low for them.
It’s a good thing it was an isolated case (as evidenced by the aggregated reviews), and they’ve received positive feedback on their overall performance since then. We primarily appreciate the positive feedback on client satisfaction that they receive.

Pros
- Popularly known for manufacturing all types of awnings
- Specializes in traditional canvas awnings
- High-quality products
- Fast turnaround times
- Impressive track record
- Free estimates
Cons
- Unknown rates
- No information about warranty
When talking about the best awning store in Portland, Pike Awning Co. can’t be excluded from the list. They’re the city’s oldest awning manufacturer, having been in business for more than a century – quite an accomplishment, in our opinion.
We understand how you might think their style may be old-school since we thought about it too. Fortunately, Pike embraced newer tools (which is a good thing), but we appreciate the fact that they still managed to manufacture every product meticulously by hand.
Obviously, their expertise is in providing traditional canvas awnings, and we believe that is their competitive advantage. Still, customers can reach them for metal awnings or retractable awnings, as well as retractable exterior screens and shade sails.
Another thing that earned them points on our score sheet was the high quality of their products. Clients praise the shade and weather protection provided by their awnings, as well as their durability – a solid combination in our books.
On a more positive note, Pike is a fantastic awning installer with a quick turnaround time. This is another win for us because it’s not easy to deliver such a type of work, which speaks to effective workmanship.
Finally, their track record demonstrates that they have worked with hundreds of thousands of clients both within and outside of the city. They simply don’t disclose their rates, however, they’re available for free estimates.

Pros
- Over five decades in the business
- Best for producing simple yet functional awnings
- Also makes customized retractable awnings
- Mostly works with homeowners
- Inclusion of silk screen lettering for commercial clients
- Quick on installing awnings
Cons
- Doesn’t disclose rates and warranties
For simple awning needs, most residential homeowners turn to McGee Blinds & Awnings. Our research revealed that they are the best for this, whether they are welded or pipe frame awnings, or the most basic of all, canvas awnings.
Despite the fact that their primary market is city homeowners, they also provide awning services to commercial clients. Business owners appreciate the inclusion of silk screen lettering that comes with their service, which adds a more vibrant finish to their brand.
They also make customized retractable awnings, with their ‘eclipse’ model being the most popular. From what we’ve heard, it improves the appearance of homes in addition to their actual function, making them in demand.
But if you want the most functional yet simple product, go with their “total eclipse” model, which offers complete coverage and is ideal for a large outdoor space.
However, we don’t find this one to be visually appealing, so we’re not crazy about recommending it if that is an issue for you.
Unfortunately, McGee has no information regarding its price structure nor available reviews that tackle its rates. At least, your best bet would be to tap them for estimates as prices can be highly variable anyway.
However, there is some good news in terms of turnaround time. Their installers are usually on time and install awnings according to the agreed-upon schedule, so give them a call if you prefer speedy services like us.

Pros
- Over 30 years of experience in the field
- Specializes in aluminum-made awnings
- Takes pride in maintenance-free awnings
- Installations doesn’t require posts
- Assures perfect fit
- Reasonably priced
Cons
- Minor issues about delivery dates
- No operating hours available
If you’re looking for awnings that don’t require maintenance, Allied Awning may be the best option. They specialize in aluminum doors, windows, and patio awnings that are built to withstand Northwest weather extremes.
When it comes to their aluminum-made products, they offer a variety of colors and take pride in the fact that they will not fade, tear, or mildew like cloth. So, when it comes to truly maintenance-free service, that’s pretty reassuring.
Aside from that, they are proud to offer hassle-free awnings. To that end, none of their installations require posts, which, when you think about it, could otherwise obstruct the client’s entryway.
Besides their in-house style, Allied, like most awning businesses, customize awnings to complement clients’ homes without sacrificing the benefit of shade and shelter. It’s nothing special, but the mere mention of it delights us.
When it comes to the installation of awnings, we find them very effective. Despite some issues with delivery dates, they provide their clients with the assurance of a perfect fit by personally taking measurements, resulting in a trouble-free investment.
Lastly, previous clients stated that they charged reasonable prices, though we have not been made aware of their actual pricing structure. In fact, almost all of the few reviews they have are about how cost-effective they are.
