The Best Brews and Vibes Are in These Cafes in Portland
As a freelancer, I’ve kind of developed a sixth sense for spotting good coffee and great energy. Those are the two things that keep my creative brain from short-circuiting.
Portland, of course, makes that hunt effortless. Between client calls and the occasional existential crisis over deadlines, I’ve made it my mission to explore the city’s most inviting cafes.
Each spot has its own vibe, some filled with chatter and latte art, others hushed and moody with the right lo-fi playlist.
Whether you’re after productivity or a perfectly brewed cup, these cafes in Portland are where the best brews and great vibes collide.

I love Broder Cafe’s selection of classic coffee, which includes cappuccino and latte.
Their signature Broder blend house coffee stood out the most to me. It’s a combination of two arabica varieties (Typica and Bourbon), giving it a balanced, sweet flavor that I really love sipping on. It doesn’t have that extremely fruity or super acidic taste.
Don’t miss out on their Danish pancakes too. They’re far from typical flat American pancakes.
They have a crisp outer shell, which gives a pleasant contrast to the soft interior. The lemon curd and lingonberry jam toppings add just the right amount of sweetness and tartness too.
However, I find the 18% gratuity fee a bit off-putting. It would be best if they only charge this for groups with a certain number of people, like what other cafes do.
I love this place
“I love this place <3 The atmosphere is cozy and inviting, noise and tight seating considered. The food is fresh and delicious, truly the ultimate comfort food experience. The service is unmatched, staff here are friendly and helpful. Who doesn’t enjoy being around positive people? Not me! As a typically savory eater, I branched out today and tried the pancakes. They were hot and fluffy with an herby essence to them. The jam & curd were just as lovely. The Nordic bread served with savory breakfast is absolutely amazing flavor and texture wise.”

My favorite restaurant in Portland
“This is my favorite restaurant in Portland! The food is so amazing. My favorite is definitely the salmon fishcakes. I feel like that’s such a good balanced brunchy meal. The Swedish pancakes are definitely also a highlight the lemon curd is so delicious! I am also partial to the potato sausage it is just so light for a sausage. An amazing side dish! It really depends on the day I would say during weekends there is a bit of a wait, but it is just luck of the draw sometimes. So worth it though! (I added three different salmon fish cake pics so you know how serious I am about them)”

I really appreciate Proud Mary’s friendly staff. Every time I visit, the staff on duty never fail to greet me with a smile. That simple gesture always makes the place feel welcoming and comfortable.
Not only that, the coffee selection here is great too. They offer a great selection of drip coffee, espresso, and more.
My go-to coffee here is flat white because I love how the strong taste of espresso is balanced by the creamy milk. It’s creamy enough, not watery or overly milky, which I give their baristas praise for.
Beyond the drinks, their food menu is worth checking out too. They serve everything from cakes to toast and other brunch staples.
I’m a huge fan of their avo toast as it’s more than just a smashed avocado on bread. The combination of heirloom tomato, sourdough, and figs adds layers of flavor and texture that hooked me from the first bite.
If there’s a downside, it’s how crowded the place can get. Proud Mary is a popular brunch spot, so expect a bit of a wait during peak hours.
Highly recommend
“Top notch service, drinks, sweet treats and food. The coffee selection is sure to impress any connoisseur. The latte I had was the best ever. The carrot cake and lemon raspberry dessert were way too good to be gluten free, but they were. The salmon dish was refreshing and savory. This was my second visit here, and I will definitely come back again. The weekday visit was lovely because hardly anyone was inside. Weekend will have a wait. Highly recommend!!”

The atmosphere here is really nice
“My family and I have passed by this place many times and finally decided to try it. The atmosphere here is really nice. A little loud on the music, but it’s not too bad. The music is a really good selection, though. The staff here are super nice and polite. The food was absolutely delicious, and the coffee here is done extremely well! I would definitely recommend dropping in and pulling up a chair and get something to eat.”

For those who want to get a taste of Japan without actually going there, I highly recommend Behind The Museum Cafe. This cafe serves a lot of Japanese food, including onigiri and otsumami.
Their onigiri comes in many fillings, which I love. Customers can choose to have salmon, ume pickles, and more as a filling. For its side dishes, you can opt for either organic edamame or Japanese-style homemade napa cabbage.
I’m a strong coffee lover, and I can say that they serve mostly strong coffee. They partnered with Extracto Coffee Roasters, which generally has strong coffee beans.
I love their macchiatos’ strong yet balanced flavor. They understand the assignment not to overpower espresso but instead to complement it with added milk flavors.
That said, the cafe has relatively short operating hours. Staying here much longer than a couple of hours would be great.
I would highly recommend this place
“Great ambience and appropriate, plus clean interior space. Went along well with theme and connected to the museum in its displays and sales of trinkets and kimonos. Love the food. Delicious samples of traditional Japanese snacks from modern examples. I would highly recommend the ic ed, matcha latte. It comes with frozen green tea ice cream, pieces of dessert like a brownie and a cute umbrella on top. I would highly recommend this place to a friend and would be one of the first places I would bring visitors to Portland to see and eat for lunch! Service is great and they test for covet immediately at the front door.”

Such a nice cafe
“I’ve been here twice now and it’s fast becoming my favorite cafe. Today I tried the matcha brownie, which was moist and rich with walnuts, and the assorted appetizers. The appetizers were lightly salted edamame in the pod, Japanese style cabbage, and cucumber with miso dip. All were well balanced and bright. I had a perfect pour over that was rich with not a hint of bitterness. The staff have been very friendly both times I’ve been in, and the ambience is cheerful.”

Sociable people would surely love hanging out at Hostel Cafe. It has strong community vibes, hosting open mic and music events almost daily. It’s always a great time sipping hot coffee here with my close friends while listening to tunes.
Another highlight is the variety of seating options available. Customers can either chill indoors, outdoors, or in their beautiful courtyard with a fireplace.
Additionally, they have a great selection of classic coffee. They serve well-known ones like latte, espresso, and Americano.
I suggest giving their Americano a try. I’m addicted to its smooth, bold, yet well-balanced flavor. It doesn’t have the excessive bitterness that you get from Americanos from other cafes.
The only drawback is that the noise at the cafe can sometimes get very wild, especially in the evening, since it operates until 10 PM.
You’ll love it
“The Hostel Cafe isn’t just a place to rest, eat food and drink yummy coffee but It’s a place that actually helps the community. They helped me during a time that I really needed help and the owner is a wonderful woman. I feel like everybody should come and just support this place even if it’s just because they’re great people.Their location is near pretty much all the good attractions in this area. They have bands play behind the café in the back, have an outdoor area you can sit, they do events around the neighborhood and walks as well to tour the neighborhood.Come and visit! You’ll love it! Thank you for everything, I’m forever grateful.”

The cafe was amazing
“The cafe was amazing! We were staying at the Hostel so we had the opportunity to have breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the Cafe and all were fantastic. The food was delicious. The service was so wonderful and personal. Just lovely 😍. And the atmosphere was so laid back and comfortable. I live in Florida but when I come back to Portland, I will definitely come back here!”

Honey Latte Cafe is where I often work. Every corner of the cafe has an outlet, making it convenient for freelancers like me. With many outlets around, I don’t need to wait for some customers to leave before I can plug my laptop in.
Another thing I like here is the wide selection of coffee. They have cortado, latte, and even iced coffee that I sometimes order if the weather is extremely hot.
But when it’s not sunny, I always go for their cappuccino. What made me love it is its perfectly balanced espresso, steamed milk, and milk foam. Their baristas are skilled in applying a lower milk-to-foam ratio than espresso, resulting in a rich, strong flavor.
However, food lovers might not be satisfied visiting here, as they offer limited food options. They only serve varieties of bagels and burritos.
Try their house burrito made with organic ingredients, including tofu and potatoes. It has a fresher, more natural taste than a traditional burrito.
Would definitely come back here
“Lovely neighborhood coffee shop that has delicious drinks. There were so many that sounded good, it was hard to decide, but the baristas were so friendly and helpful they helped steer me in the right direction. I ended up getting the fruity pebbles latte which is made with milk from fruity pebbles and did not disappoint! There is tons of seating inside if you want to chill on a couch or work at table. Plus they have some lovely outdoor space too so people can enjoy the nice weather. Would definitely come back here for more tasty drinks.”
