5 ENT Specialists in Portland to Solve Your ENT Issues
From the dreary waiting rooms to poor patient care, ENT visits can go south fast.
We’ve heard stories of people leaving clinics with ears still packed with wax, or others still stuck with scratchy, stubborn throat problems that weren’t COVID. They felt even more let down by the care than when they walked in.
Hearing about these letdowns during such vulnerable moments made us want to look into which ENT specialists in Portland actually help people feel heard and cared for.
Here’s who stood out after interviewing locals, reviewing credentials and backgrounds, and going on some undercover consultations!

Dr. Brian Shaffer’s clinic stands out for how often patients walk out with real results, especially when it comes to stubborn nasal and ear problems.
Dr. Shaffer gets straight to the point, but still makes his patients feel heard. One patient told us that other ENTs brushed off their constant ear tickle, but Dr. Shaffer actually listened and fixed it.
Someone else who had a deviated septum surgery said he’s both no-nonsense and genuinely caring, which made them trust his advice.
We also liked how the staff keeps things relaxed and friendly, even during minor sinus issue consults. The staff still explains everything patients need to know about keeping their sinuses in check and how to manage them.
The only catch? Getting an appointment can take a while. One patient told us it took a few weeks to schedule an appointment with Dr. Shaffer due to the referral work involved.
They took very well care of me
“I had an appointment with Dr Shaffer last year he find nose problems I can’t breathe properly and recommend surgery to fix also Tonsils issues. I was having issues since I was 10 years old but 2018 got worse so I went to 3 different doctors no one can’t find anything I was perfect they recommended to saw a psychiatrist. I was desperate I find relief when Dr Shaffer in 2024 can see what I was seeing. I had surgery on July 2024. It was a life changer I can breathe now for my nose not mouth breathing anymore. The team is great got check after surgery by Erika. This is very important because they took very well care of me and mentally supported me during and after surgery they were for me too making sure I was well. Dr Brian T Shaffer changed my life for good. He is professional, kind and good person. But most important for me was his honesty telling me what was happening with me and pointing the issues.”

Very knowledgeable, and explained things well
“Dr. Shaffer was kind, very knowledgeable, and explained things well. He was finally able to rid me of the vertigo I have been experiencing for 2+ months and give me options for my sinus problems. He was running pretty far behind schedule, but that was the only negative.”

Randall Children’s Ear, Nose, and Throat is the place parents turn to when ear infections and endless colds just won’t quit.
One parent shared how their kid had been through a carousel of doctors, but it was Randall’s team who finally figured out what was going on.
We like that the vibe here is gentle and kid-first, which makes a big difference when dealing with a miserable little one.
The specialists here actually take the time to break things down for both kids and parents, skipping the medical jargon.
One parent mentioned how the doctor’s easy explanations calmed their nerves during a consultation for their son’s snoring. Turns out, the culprit was enlarged tonsils.
The office is also bright and clearly set up for kids. One family pointed out that the waiting room is stocked with toys, which keeps the little ones busy and takes the edge off the wait.
The only catch is that getting into their system requires referrals for patients from outside their hospital system. One family said it took them a few weeks just to land their first appointment.
They were so good
“They were so good with my daughter and myself. We travel from Washington to see our Dr there. I have never been more satisfied with how in depth they look into things. I would recommend to everyone I know.”

Dr. Andrew Pedersen stands out for his delicate procedures, such as thyroid and ear surgeries.
One patient shared his experience with thyroid surgery. He said Dr.Pedersen’s bedside manner put him at ease from the start. He also appreciated how gentle he was during the procedure and how he made sure he knew exactly what to do for aftercare.
Recovery here is surprisingly quick for most procedures. One patient who had ear surgery told us he was back to his usual routine in just under two weeks.
Dr. Pedersen also gets high marks for how quickly he handles stubborn nasal polyps.
We heard from a patient who’d dealt with sinus congestion for years, trying every nasal spray on the market. After a short procedure here, he said he could finally breathe clearly again.
If there’s a catch, it’s the wait time for non-urgent visits. One patient mentioned waiting in the waiting room for 30 minutes before being seen.
He asked a variety of questions
“My experience visiting Dr. Pedersen was great. He asked a variety of questions about my condition and took time to go through the results of my hearing test and explain likely causes. I plan to visit him annually from now on.”

Dr. Pedersen had it out in less than two minute
“A piece of hearing came off in the ear canal and defined all efforts of removal at a hospital emergency room. ER did not have the proper instruments. Dr. Pedersen had it out in less than two minutes. Nice to hear properly once again.”

PDX ENT is the kind of place where patients can walk in with anything from stubborn ear infections to questions about facial plastics, and know they won’t be bounced around. A patient appreciated how their doctors are upfront from the beginning.
What really stood out to us was how their team handles tough cases. One patient dealing with cholesteatoma (a skin growth that causes hearing issues) told us the ENT didn’t dismiss it because it was not cancerous, but quickly scheduled a removal.
Another with Zenker’s diverticulum (a pouch at the top of the esophagus that causes difficulty swallowing) appreciated how the doctor checks in on them after the procedure is over.
We also like how their audiologists and ENT doctors actually talk to each other, so patients dealing with hearing loss are not left hanging between visits.
The only downside is that the waiting room can get packed, especially in the afternoon, and wait times are usually at least 15 minutes.
With the patient’s best interest at heart
“I saw Sheleen Wycherley today and once last March. She is efficient, knows her stuff, and gives her opinion in a kind way with the patient’s best interest at heart. I highly recommend her and this clinic. They are up to date even on highly unusual systemic diagnoses and how it affects your sinus cavities.”

Dr. Samuel G. Shiley’s practice stands out for how much time he invests in his patients. We met one patient who has been seeing him for over a decade. He told us he loves how Dr. Shiley actually listens to his concerns during his appointments.
We like how he remembers the small details and checks in on patients for follow-ups when necessary. One patient recovering from sinus surgery told us Dr. Shiley called their home several times just to see how things had improved.
He’s also the kind of ENT who doesn’t give up when insurance gets tricky. One patient told us it took a few weeks to sort things out, but Dr. Shiley stuck with him the whole time instead of just dropping him.
He’s especially good with sinus issues too. We heard from a woman who’d spent years feeling stuffed up, and she said Dr. Shiley’s advice finally helped her breathe easy again.
Subsequent follow-ups have been great
“In first quarter of 2024, Dr. Shiley removed a large number of nasal polyps. No problems, no discomfort, and I could breathe through my nose again. I was surprised and pleased. Subsequent follow-ups have been great. Always on top of my situation with care, follow-ups and scheduling. The Oregon Clinic is my provider of choice!”

Absolute best doctor I’ve ever had
“The absolute best doctor I’ve ever had the privilege of working with! Very kind, patient, and experienced I needed my tonsils out for many years and I’m so glad I found him, because he did an excellent job. I felt well cared for, informed, and the aftercare was explained to me in detail so I felt prepared going home. I would recommend him to anyone!”
