Hours: Monday-Sunday 9:00 AM – 8:00 PM
Portland Math Tutor is one of our favorites because they have over 20 years of experience and degrees from the California Institute of Technology (CalTech) and the University of California (UC), Santa Cruz.
This high-level background is perfectly tailored for college-bound teens and adult learners tackling subjects like linear algebra. Plus, they provide college counseling to help seniors navigate the tricky admissions process.
When we interviewed a parent whose high schooler was struggling with AP Calculus, she mentioned this tutoring service was an absolute lifesaver for her family.

Finally, a tutor who speaks human!
I’ve gotta say, finding a tutor who doesn’t talk like a robot is nearly impossible, but John is the real deal. He makes everything easy to follow and actually helped my son get it.
If your kid is struggling with math, do yourself a favor and book him.
John’s patient, straightforward, and by a mile the best teacher we’ve worked with. He’s highly recommended for a reason, he just makes the hard stuff simple to understand.
10 out of 10 would recommend!

Address: 4230 NE Fremont Street, #A

Hours: Monday-Thursday 3:00 PM – 7:00 PM | Saturday-Sunday 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM
Mathnasium of Northeast Portland is one of our picks due to their highly structured environment, which helps build a rock-solid foundation rather than rushing through.
One highlight is their proprietary teaching approach. This starts with a comprehensive diagnostic assessment to pinpoint strengths and weaknesses before creating a customized learning plan.
They also focus heavily on teaching for true understanding instead of just having kids memorize formulas, which is incredibly helpful for long-term retention.
Plus, families can conveniently choose between in-center learning and online sessions, offering flexibility for busy weeks.
Just keep in mind that they operate strictly on a flat-fee enrollment model, where students attend regularly, which isn’t for drop-in sessions. Also, they only teach grades K-12, so college students will need another option.

Lighting a real spark for math
We are very happy to have supplemented our kids’ education with Mathnasium tutoring. Both of our kids’ test scores improved after 6 months as did their confidence. Time with wonderful math tutors has really lit a fire for one of our kids who continued to go to Mathnasium for additional math for about 2 years. Loving math is a big part of his identity at age 11 – this photo is what he picked in a recent “about me” assignment for school.

Friendly, flexible, and keeps us up to speed
My child enjoys going to Mathnasium. She is only two months in but we have nothing but positive things to say about it. The staff are very friendly and we appreciate the flexibility of drop off. Her school moves too fast through math lessons (many classmates also attend Mathnasium) and this helps her to keep up.

Larson Tutoring & Test Prep stands out for using a specialized, divided-expertise approach. This way, one dedicated tutor handles all math and science instruction while a separate tutor focuses exclusively on reading and English.
The team also covers everything from foundational skills to International Baccalaureate (IB) exam preparation. With this range, they provide support for students at different learning levels and academic goals.
Plus, they’re certified to use the Orton-Gillingham reading instruction. This way, they can tutor neurodivergent students with dyslexia.
We recently spoke with a family during their transition from elementary school. They mentioned how they loved how the tutor incorporated executive function coaching directly into the sessions to build better study habits.
And while we appreciate their boutique approach, they aren’t the place for adult math learners.

A massive 250-point SAT jump!
I had an amazing experience with my SAT prep! Brett was an incredibly helpful and patient English tutor, and Abby made the math sections so much easier to understand. Thanks to their guidance, I improved my score by 250 points in just two months. Highly recommend!

The best part of his school week
My son was in a tutoring group with Larson Tutoring this past fall, as he was starting his freshman year of high school doing full-time distance learning. We wanted to give him an experience of in-person instruction, especially for geometry and physics. Abby provided an engaging experiences for the small group, and my son not only enjoyed it, but felt it was the best part of his school week. Abby is personable and professional, and really seemed to care about the individual needs of the kids in the group. We will definitely use Larson Tutoring again!

Flexible scheduling and a 200-point SAT boost
My daughter was looking to boost her SAT score. She was motivated, but needed some help with her math skills and test taking strategies. Sylvan provided both over a fairly intensive two month period. Scheduling was flexible, she liked her teachers and she improved her score by 200 points! Thank you Justin, Tanya and Sylvan teaching crew!

Caught up and surpassing expectations!
We heart Sylvan!! My son was a grade and a half behind in Math and Reading when he started. A year of hard work later and he has surpassed all expectations! He really enjoys his instructors and Justin and Tanya are top notch administrators. I would recommend them – and have – to anyone looking for tutoring.

5. Emergent Education Tutoring & Test Prep

We like Emergent Education Tutoring & Test Prep for focusing heavily on teaching creative problem-solving techniques. This method helps students use what they already know to figure out what they don’t.
They also employ a large, local team that tutors a massive range of subjects, from basic pre-algebra all the way up to AP Statistics. You can even bundle standard math support with their ACT and SAT prep services as college approaches.
We also want to mention that they’re particularly great at providing individualized instruction tailored for students. For example, they can help students with learning differences who might get lost in a traditional classroom setting.
One thing to note is that they don’t operate a dedicated physical center, so all in-person sessions must be held at your home or a public space.

Even her teacher noticed the difference!
We’ve had a great experience with Eric and our tutor Iris, who helps our third grade daughter with math. Scheduling and communication is simple and clear, and most importantly our daughter has grown in confidence and ability with math skills since she started working with Iris. We’ve all seen the difference, including her teacher!

Excellent tutors and great communication
Our experience with Emergent Education has been very positive. We started during virtual school to supplement math teaching. We have had the opportunity to work with two tutors who have both been excellent. They worked well with our child and communicated well with us. We are happy to recommend them to other families.
