Top 5 Tutoring Services in Portland

How We Picked Tutoring Centers in Portland

Expertise

We only chose the tutors who have the proper qualifications and experience in tutoring students for the subjects they’ll be teaching.

Subjects Taught

You may be looking to have your child tutored for multiple subjects, so we chose tutors that teach a wide range of subjects.

Approach

Each student has their own learning style, and tutors must be capable of adjusting their teaching style to the students. This is a measure of the tutor’s flexibility.

Pros

  • Patient toward students
  • Students stay with him for years
  • Can adjust to students well
  • Great teaching style

Cons

  • Currently online classes only
  • Math-focused

Portland Math Tutor is owned and run by John Lindgren. He works full-time as a tutor, but he boasts credentials such as a master’s degree in mathematics and a BA in English literature and has been published by periodicals.

He teaches every branch of math, ranging from algebra to geometry as well as calculus and its multiple extensions. Other than that, he also does SAT and ACT prep for high school seniors.

He’s also been a college counselor to some and has helped students get into the school of their dreams. Upon our research, we found out this is because of John’s teaching style that encourages his students to keep learning.

Many of his students have been with him for years, usually from middle school to high school. His students only have glowing words to say about him, calling him a patient and supportive teacher.

As we said, he mostly teaches math and does college prep. He doesn’t list down other subjects like other sciences or English in the list of subjects he teaches, but it’s still worth the shot to call him and ask.

We aren’t too worried about this, as students usually need tutoring in math more than any other subject.

However, his tutoring services are currently done online due to health and safety reasons, and that may be important to take note of if your child would benefit more from in-person tutoring.

Pros

  • Offers one free session
  • Has a 30-day money-back guarantee
  • Has online and in-home tutoring
  • Good record of improvement among students

Cons

  • Expensive
  • No nonmembership options

Tutor Portland teaches almost every subject out there: from math to the sciences and even languages like Spanish!

What we like best about them is how they make it convenient for the families and students who will avail of their services. They offer both online and in-home services, and if you choose the latter, the tutor will be the one to personally visit your home.

If you’re unsure about the quality of the tutoring they provide, you can avail of their free session from their website. Not only that, they tutor students from all kinds of levels—elementary to high school, and they even offer adult tutoring!

The results speak for themselves, and most of the students who’ve worked with them saw gradual improvements in their grades. This will, of course, depend on the student, but they’ve had a good record so far.

If there’s a gripe we have about them, it’s that they only offer monthly memberships. While these sessions don’t expire, we understand that there may be some who will only want to get a few tutoring sessions.

Their rates are pretty expensive too. The cheapest membership is $420 a month for one session every week, followed by $816 for two sessions a week, and $1,188 for three sessions a week.

While we have no doubt about the quality of the services they provide, their prices may be unaffordable to some families.

Pros

  • Offers free consultation
  • Has affordable options
  • Creates personalized tutoring programs
  • Has online and in-person options
  • Wide range of subjects taught

Cons

  • Minor complaints of not being a good fit
  • Service will vary on assigned tutor

Sylvan Learning not only teaches almost every subject your kid will go through in their schooling years, but they also offer homework and school support to help your kids with pressure from school.

We like how they create a personalized tutoring program for each student they have under them because each student is different after all.

They don’t have set rates for their services, but they do make it a point to make their services affordable to all kinds of families, and they’ll find a way for you to be able to get the tutoring services your child will need.

You can opt for either online or in-person tutoring sessions, but if you choose the latter, you don’t have to worry about safety, as they follow all health guidelines and practice social distancing.

Sylvan Learning does have a number of teachers on their team, and we have heard of very few reporting that the assigned teachers weren’t the best fit for their children.

We don’t take that against them, as it’s also about compatibility between the tutor and the student, but another option you have is to request another teacher for your child.

They do try their best to ensure your child receives the best tutoring services possible, and we have no doubt they will deliver on their promises.

Pros

  • Wide range of subjects taught
  • Easy to set up services on their website
  • Interactive tutoring sessions
  • Sends updates to parents

Cons

  • Some instances of unavailable tutors
  • Online only
  • Can be hard to resolve issues

Varsity Tutors not only teach a wide range of subjects, but they also have a lot of tutors that you can choose from.

Their tutors all come from different educational backgrounds, with some even graduating from the most prestigious universities in the country! You can check out each teacher’s profile on their website to see if they’re going to be a good fit.

We like how easy it is to get started with their services. All you have to do is get on their website, choose a tutor, and set up a profile for you or your child.

All of their sessions are conducted online, and there are no options for you to have them in person.

However, most of their students have found their online sessions to be interactive, with the tutors making the most out of the platform.

We have heard some complaints about their services, especially when it comes to scheduling tutors. Some reported that the tutors they booked for were unavailable during their session and they had to find a replacement.

This has led to dissatisfaction and customers expected to be refunded for their inconvenience, but unfortunately, it can be difficult to resolve issues with them, as they aren’t very responsive when it comes to addressing complaints.

That said, we do think they have a lot of knowledgeable tutors that can help your child, but they do have some issues on their platform they need to address.

Pros

  • Gives weekly progress reports
  • Has affordable options
  • Works with students with learning disabilities
  • Has in-person and online options
  • Can opt for private or group tutoring

Cons

  • Small team only
  • Limited availability

Larson Tutoring may only have two people running their business, but they’re passionate in what they do and want students to get the best quality tutoring services.

They teach most subjects for K-12 students, including all levels of mathematics, Spanish, biology, chemistry, and physics. They can also teach special topics like philosophy and astronomy and offer college prep.

We admire how they specifically note that they work with students who have learning disabilities, like dyslexia, ADHD, and dyscalculia, and even use special methodologies like the Orton-Gillingham and Lindamood-Bell Methods for dyslexia.

Not only that, they have good rates that can fit your family’s budget. It will be more expensive if you get a private session from them, but you can choose group sessions or online tutoring for a more affordable option.

As we said, they’re only a team of two, so you can’t expect them to always be available. But with each student they have, they offer the best quality tutoring services, and we can’t complain about that.

Your best option will be to reserve their services early, especially when it comes to their prep courses. You can check for constant updates and new schedules on their website.

In conclusion, we highly recommend them for your tutoring needs, and we think they can help your child achieve their academic goals.
