Portland Math Tutor is owned and run by John Lindgren. He works full-time as a tutor, but he boasts credentials such as a master’s degree in mathematics and a BA in English literature and has been published by periodicals.

He teaches every branch of math, ranging from algebra to geometry as well as calculus and its multiple extensions. Other than that, he also does SAT and ACT prep for high school seniors.

He’s also been a college counselor to some and has helped students get into the school of their dreams. Upon our research, we found out this is because of John’s teaching style that encourages his students to keep learning.

Many of his students have been with him for years, usually from middle school to high school. His students only have glowing words to say about him, calling him a patient and supportive teacher.

As we said, he mostly teaches math and does college prep. He doesn’t list down other subjects like other sciences or English in the list of subjects he teaches, but it’s still worth the shot to call him and ask.

We aren’t too worried about this, as students usually need tutoring in math more than any other subject.

However, his tutoring services are currently done online due to health and safety reasons, and that may be important to take note of if your child would benefit more from in-person tutoring.

You can opt for either online or in-person tutoring sessions, but if you choose the latter, you don’t have to worry about safety, as they follow all health guidelines and practice social distancing. 

Sylvan Learning does have a number of teachers on their team, and we have heard of very few reporting that the assigned teachers weren’t the best fit for their children.

We don’t take that against them, as it’s also about compatibility between the tutor and the student, but another option you have is to request another teacher for your child.

They do try their best to ensure your child receives the best tutoring services possible, and we have no doubt they will deliver on their promises.

We like how easy it is to get started with their services. All you have to do is get on their website, choose a tutor, and set up a profile for you or your child.

All of their sessions are conducted online, and there are no options for you to have them in person.

However, most of their students have found their online sessions to be interactive, with the tutors making the most out of the platform.

We have heard some complaints about their services, especially when it comes to scheduling tutors. Some reported that the tutors they booked for were unavailable during their session and they had to find a replacement.

This has led to dissatisfaction and customers expected to be refunded for their inconvenience, but unfortunately, it can be difficult to resolve issues with them, as they aren’t very responsive when it comes to addressing complaints.

That said, we do think they have a lot of knowledgeable tutors that can help your child, but they do have some issues on their platform they need to address.

Larson Tutoring may only have two people running their business, but they’re passionate in what they do and want students to get the best quality tutoring services.

They teach most subjects for K-12 students, including all levels of mathematics, Spanish, biology, chemistry, and physics. They can also teach special topics like philosophy and astronomy and offer college prep.

We admire how they specifically note that they work with students who have learning disabilities, like dyslexia, ADHD, and dyscalculia, and even use special methodologies like the Orton-Gillingham and Lindamood-Bell Methods for dyslexia.

Not only that, they have good rates that can fit your family’s budget. It will be more expensive if you get a private session from them, but you can choose group sessions or online tutoring for a more affordable option.

As we said, they’re only a team of two, so you can’t expect them to always be available. But with each student they have, they offer the best quality tutoring services, and we can’t complain about that.
