Established in 1928, Portland Sand & Gravel Co. stood the test of time thanks to its staff’s exceptional customer service. Their dedication is reflected in the personal touch and meticulous attention to detail they provide. Everyone I encountered was incredibly friendly and helpful.

They are well-regarded for their pea gravel, which many customers appreciate for its uniformity and cleanliness. It’s free from excessive debris, making it ideal for landscaping projects, pathways, and play areas.

Another standout feature is their focus on sustainability. You can drop off concrete, asphalt, and clean dirt for recycling, which is awesome if you’re looking to be more eco-friendly with your projects.

They also offer a wide range of products, from sand to bark dust, all at reasonable prices. The delivery service is spot-on. They’re known for being prompt and accommodating, which is a huge plus if you’re on a tight schedule.

One downside, though, is that the prices are bit high compared to other stores. While the quality does make up for the prices, it might not be the best choice for those on a tight budget.

Pros

  • Exceptional customer service
  • Uniform and clean pea gravel
  • Focus on sustainability
  • Wide range of products
  • Reliable delivery service

Cons

  • High prices

Refreshing and appreciative customer service

Everyone is so nice and patient. The lady who took our order was patient to answer our numerous questions. The lady who called us to remind/confirm before delivery driver headed out our way was so nice and enthusiastic. The delivery driver who delivered our order was so skilled, friendly, and patient to carefully dump the loads at our requested specific areas. Nowadays good service is so refreshing and appreciative! Thanks!”

Would definitely order from them again

“Friendly service, helpful answering questions about the products even down to the pH and source of materials. The split truck deliveries are a plus, I ordered 5 yards total, 3 compost, and 2 of the pumice blend. Delivery costs are reasonable, see pic for size comparison with a 1.5 cu.ft. bag – definitely more economical to bulk order soil for raised beds, large planters and/or to amend yard soil. Would order from them again, thanks!”

Oregon Decorative Rock’s selection is thoughtfully curated. Their selection isn’t the largest, but it’s meticulously curated to highlight natural stone products essential for creating aesthetically pleasing landscapes.

Among their standout products is the Montana Rainbow Pea Gravel, which combines shades of pink, blue, and gray. They have a wide selection too, which allows you to choose gravel that effectively complements your landscape design.

If you’re used to getting rock for a bargain, you might notice that the prices here are a bit higher. But the extra cost comes with convenience and fantastic customer service.

The staff were incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. They will guide you through the selection and help you choose the right products for your project.

Oregon Decorative Rock really caters to homeowners, which means you’re paying for a more straightforward, no-fuss experience. It’s worth it if you don’t want to deal with the hassle of bigger, contractor-focused yards.

Pros

  • Curated selection
  • Colorful pea gravel option
  • Excellent customer service
  • Home-owner friendly

Cons

  • Higher prices
  • Limited selection

All About Stone LLC offers an impressive selection that sets them apart from the crowd. With over 19 varieties of sand, rock, and gravel, you’re bound to find exactly what you need. Whether you need pea gravel for a backyard project or a larger commercial job, they got you covered.

Customers frequently praise the quality of their gravel products, noting that they’re not only durable but also visually appealing. This focus on high-quality materials helps enhance both the functionality and the aesthetic of outdoor spaces.

Their staff’s knowledge and willingness to help with specific project needs are frequently highlighted by customers we talked to.

They offer delivery service, which could’ve been a huge plus if there weren’t complaints about its efficiency. Some customers have reported experiencing order mix-ups and complained about unpredictable delivery times.

Additionally, while they excel with larger projects, smaller residential customers might not receive the same level of attention. The company tends to focus more on larger contracts, which can make smaller orders seem a bit less of a priority.

Pros

  • Extensive selection
  • High-quality gravel
  • Excellent customer service
  • Convenient delivery
  • Excels in larger projects

Cons

  • Occasional order mix-ups
  • Less focus on smaller projects

Outstanding quality, service, and price

Outstanding selection of pavers of various quality levels, MANY types of rock cuts, pebble, bubblers, sand. I have gone to many hardscape places around Portland and Salem. AAS beats them on price, quality and service. This place has good customer service, options for special orders. Trades and non-pro pricing.”

Matthew Richardson, Google review

Great selection of products and great team

“All About Stone is wonderful. They have a great selection of gravel, stone, rocks and pavers; and also a great team. Most recently we ordered several pallets of pavers for our yard. The staff was super helpful, but a miscommunication did occur that could have caused us a major inconvenience and expense. However, the owner called personally and helped figure out a solution. (No small business is perfect, and the difference comes down to how they handle discrepancies). We will be back to All About Stone.”

Dean Innovations Inc. excels in Portland’s landscaping market with its extensive product range. They offer pea gravel, organic composts, and firewood.

Their gravel selection is impressive too. They offer various types, including smooth ¼” pea gravel that’s perfect for landscaping and decorative features.

Plus, they are also the go-to place for firewood in the area. As the largest local provider, they’ve built a solid reputation for reliability and quality in this department.

Their sustainability efforts, like operating a public soil and garden waste recycling center, are also commendable.

While most customers have had positive experiences, a few have reported issues with responsiveness and communication.

Pros

  • Extensive product range
  • Quality gravel selection
  • Sustainability efforts
  • Strong reputation for firewood

Cons

  • Occasional issues with communication

I’ll be returning for all of my landscaping needs, highly recommended!

The ladies at Dean’s were so helpful! They helped me choose the mulch, load/rake/water it in my truck bed (so it won’t fly out while I drive) and did it all with a smile. The customer service here is top-notch. I’ll be returning for all of my landscaping needs and I highly recommend you do, too!”

Livia Hernandez, Google review

Customer service at every step was exceptional

“We recently ordered firewood to be delivered from Deans. We could not be happier with our experience!! The customer service at every step was exceptional! When the truck arrived the driver was super friendly and even backed in our driveway to make it easier for us to move and stack in our garage. The wood was exactly what we had ordered and it even smelled good! We are warm and our family is enjoying quarantine around the cracking fire! Thank you Deans for making this time a little cozier!! They also sell landscaping materials and gardening soil! This spring we will definitely be ordering from them for our raised garden!! Highly recommend!!”

Staff is helpful and great to work with

I had a great experience with best buy in town! The staff was really helpful as I needed advice on what to use to deal with a big patch of grass that had turned muddy from being driven on. We successfully covered and fixed the muddy area  with gravel. We also spruced up the yard with red hemlock bark and the difference it made is amazing! Jeff and Q were so helpful and great to work with.”

Molly Matlock, Google review

Great place with wide range of options

“Great place with tons of options. The people working here are friendly and very helpful. They’ve made recommendations for me quite a few times that have helped. So far I’ve gotten gravel, fill dirt, top soil and some nice paver stones. Never had any problems. Will definitely be coming back for more.”
