Pros

  • Specializes in ADHD and ADD
  • Has a holistic approach
  • Respects patient preferences

Cons

  • Limited slots for new patients
  • Doesn’t accept Medicare, Medicaid, or Oregon Health Plan

With more than 10 years of experience, Larry Eckman has treated a range of conditions such as anxiety and depression but specializes in the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Eckman is also a licensed psychotherapist who recognizes the connection between mind and body. Thus, he embraces approaches that don’t have to include medication in the mix.

This is good news if you’re the type who would prefer not to take medication. You won’t feel pressured to take them! You are welcome to express your preferences, which he will happily respect.

What we like most about Eckman is his open and patient approach to everyone who enters his clinic. Not only will he take the time to listen to you, but he also has a good record of loyalty among his patients.

We found that those who came to him for ADHD treatment came out with good things to say. They report a better understanding of themselves and improved functionality.

That being said, Eckman mostly works with patients with ADHD or ADD. While he does treat other conditions, we can’t really vouch for how well he approaches other mental issues.

What you do have to know is that he doesn’t always accept new patients. An upside to this, however, is that he makes the effort to call back each voicemail and will help you find another provider.

His dedication and care to each person who calls him left a good mark on us. If Larry Eckman is the psychiatrist you think you need to see, he is definitely worth the call, even if you may not end up being his patient.

Pros

  • Fewer patients allows more availability
  • 16 insurance plans accepted
  • Adult and forensic psychiatrist

Cons

  • Long waiting time for new patients
  • Few patients describe him as cold

Our second pick is double-board certified psychiatrist Dr. Soroush Mohandessi. He provides both adult and forensic psychiatry services for mental conditions and forensic cases.

With 12 years of experience in the field, Dr. Moh, as he is called, provides diagnoses and treatments to his patients. He is trained in both psychotherapy and psychopharmacology, which he uses to complement each other.

Because of his expertise, Dr. Moh is dedicated to making sure medications and talk therapies work together in your treatment. Patients who’ve been with him admire his patience in diagnosing and adjusting his approach to what will work best for them.

Although we have to note that not all patients are happy with his approach. We’ve heard some of them report that Dr. Moh can be cold and referred his patients to other psychiatrists he thought were more suitable for them.

You also do have to know that Dr. Moh only accepts a few new patients. But he does this to make sure that each patient of his gets more attention and availability from him for appointments.

Speaking of appointments, we’ve found that if he does take new patients, you will have to wait for at least a month. So if your needs are urgent, you will want to look at other options on this list that can attend to you right away.

All that being said, Dr. Moh is a talented psychiatrist who can treat mental conditions and also be an expert witness in forensic cases. He’s a good choice for a psychiatrist who is dedicated to your treatment if you’re willing to wait for an open slot.

Pros

  • Accepts new patients
  • Speaks English and German
  • Has a background in nursing
  • Accepts Medicaid
  • Adult and geriatric psychiatrist

Cons

  • Psychopharmacology is not her strongest suit

Heike Sommer is a well-rounded psychiatric nurse practitioner with experience in different kinds of psychotherapies and has practiced nursing before she entered psychiatry.

Sommer is a specialist in hypnotherapy. And while she does offer medication management as one of her services, she is better skilled at other approaches.

Her time and experience in nursing make us confident in her capacity for care. She accepts messages in her voicemail and puts in the time to check them often but also leaves a crisis line open if you are in an emergency.

We were impressed to see Sommer’s exposure in different hospital departments such as the emergency room, internal medicine, and oncology. We would easily recommend her to those who have other medical diagnoses and need psychological support.

Not only that, she is currently taking in new patients and accepts Medicaid! But if you miss your first appointment without a 24-hour notice, you will still be billed for the time.

Other than that, she also offers workshops and consultations for non-medical concerns. The only difference with these services is that fees will vary depending on your needs.

While we mentioned that psychopharmacology isn’t her strongest suit, her vast experience means she definitely still understands how medication works with certain conditions. She uses this to her advantage and determines which psychotherapies will be suitable for you.

Overall, Heike Sommer is extremely skilled in patient care. She is a good choice for those who need a compassionate provider in need of psychological support, with or without other medical conditions.

Pros

  • Specializes in anxiety, trauma, PTSD, and eating disorders
  • LGBTQ+ friendly
  • Offers family therapy
  • Prioritizes talk therapy

Cons

  • Insufficient time during appointments
  • Few accepted insurance plans
  • Waiting list for new patients

Next on our list is Dr. Kathryn Zerbe, a psychiatry specialist with over 40 years of experience. She specializes in anxiety, trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and eating disorders.

With many years in practice, Dr. Zerbe is an accomplished psychiatrist in both actual clinical practice and research. She has written three books and has maintained a good number of patients through the years, including mental health professionals.

Because of her specialties, she mostly approaches mental health conditions by helping patients identify the roots of their issues from their early years. This approach allows patients to understand themselves better and help them build resiliency.

The one thing we’ve found patients complain about is insufficient time during their appointments with her. But these patients also call her a compassionate and caring doctor who stays with them for years in treatment.

We’ve also observed that most of Dr. Zerbe’s patients are women. While this doesn’t mean she is incapable of handling male patients, she is an ideal choice for women and members of the LGBTQ+ community.

Dr. Zerbe is also the only one on this list who puts eating disorders in the issues they deal with. Two of her books are on this subject, so she is a suitable pick if you or someone you know is looking for an eating disorder specialist.

When it comes to consistency in patient satisfaction, Dr. Zerbe has left a positive impression on us. Patients from the 1990s still have good words to say about her, making her a reliable choice for a psychiatrist.

Pros

  • Child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist
  • Exposed to different cultures
  • Specializes in medication management
  • Good record of patient loyalty
  • Accepts most insurance plans

Cons

  • Currently by referral only

Our last pick is perhaps the most decorated psychiatrist on this list. Dr. Robert McKelvey is a child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist with almost 50 years of experience.

We were impressed with Dr. McKelvey’s background. He has been exposed to many cultures and has practiced in different areas, making him a good fit for immigrants or those from different cultural backgrounds.

Given the range in his practice, Dr. McKelvey has worked with patients from their childhood into their adult years. Not only that, he also has a good record of patient loyalty and the ability to work with families.

While he is an adult psychiatrist, we honestly think that Dr. McKelvey’s passion lies more in treating children and adolescents. His books are mostly about children and pediatric care, and he’s served as director of child and adolescent psychiatry in different institutions.

The one advantage Dr. McKelvey has in adult psychiatry is his years of experience and age. Now 77, he served in the Vietnam War and once practiced in Australia, giving him an understanding that only comes with time.

His patients describe him as a hands-on psychiatrist who can work with patients with multiple diagnoses. This is especially important for children who may have complexities in their mental conditions.

However, his expertise comes with a big catch: he’s currently only taking patients by referral. So if you’re set on speaking with Dr. McKelvey, your best shot is to have your physician refer you to him.
