Pros

  • Open every day
  • Easy to order color samples from their website
  • Wide range of paints and painting supply

Cons

  • Occasionally slow service

Sherwin-Williams Paint Store made it to our list of best paint stores in Portland because of its wide range of selections. They’re also quite accommodating, based on our polls.

According to some of their past customers that we’ve talked to, if this paint store didn’t have what they needed, the staff was kind enough to ask other branches. If other branches did, they had it shipped in so the customer didn’t need to drive far.

We thought this was pretty convenient and says a lot about how Sherwin-Williams Paint Store goes out of their way to keep customers happy.

We also found them quite helpful and knowledgeable when it comes to color mixing. It was obvious that the staff members had numerous experiences when it comes to this.

They were also patient when we asked them hundreds of questions – they had answers for each one.

Needless to say, the staff made our shopping experience a lot better.

It’s quite easy to shop with them online too, but take note that you need to register to do so.

Just like their online stores, they also have a variety of products. You can even order color samples to help you decide on the final color that you need.

However, when interviewing their past customers, some things needed improvement that came to light such as some occasions of slow service.

While the staff is adept in their jobs, some mentioned that the service was slow. If the store happens to be busy, expect to wait for a few minutes until someone can attend to your needs.

If you’re not in a hurry and don’t mind waiting, we don’t see why you shouldn’t check out Sherwin-Williams Paint Store.

Pros

  • Have their own premium paint
  • Easy parking

Cons

  • A few reports of poor customer service
  • Pricier than most

Miller Paint is known for carrying its own brand of premium paint that they started making in 1890.

When we sat down to have a chat with their past customers, we wanted to hear what they had to say about the quality of the paint, the efficiency and knowledge of the staff, and other opinions or observations worth noting.

Some of them mentioned that they admire the knowledge of the staff and we keenly agree with that.

When we went down to visit the store, the staff of Miller Paint answered a lot of our questions and also gave us additional advice on how to do our painting projects.

We think it’s also important to mention that we didn’t feel judged whatsoever even though we didn’t have any idea when it comes to paint and such.

Some mentioned that they have a wide range of choices when it comes to paint and wallpaper.

Whereas some also stated they go here because they like the idea of supporting locally owned and made paint.

Additionally, if you need a close paint match, Miller Paint can do a fantastic job. A lot of those who availed of this service said that this was the only place that got the closest match.

Although there were a lot of customers who were satisfied because of the knowledge of their staff, there were also those who mentioned the staff being rude.

While we didn’t have any experiences regarding this, we thought it was still important to mention.

Moreover, their paints are also pricier than most, so if you’re on a tight budget, there might be other options for you.

Overall, we loved how well-rounded the staff is when it comes to knowledge of paints. If you’re looking for a guide to point you in the right direction in your projects, they might just suit your needs.

Pros

  • Quick turnaround time
  • They have 3 accessible branches in Portland
  • Also has other services

Cons

  • Occasionally poor customer service

Powell Paint Center offers different selections such as interior paint, exterior paint, exterior stain, primers, and enamels.

When we got ahold of some of their past customers to see what they thought about this paint store, most, if not all, were impressed by their quick turnaround time.

These customers said that they ordered paint by calling in ahead and they were quickly prepared to be ready for pickup!

This is the same when you ask for a custom paint match – it seems that the paint the customers asked for was done in no time.

We concluded that this was one of the reasons why they have a lot of return customers.

When we tried out their services, it was indeed quick. We didn’t have to wait for a long time before the staff approached us to listen to our concerns.

They were also quick to provide us with what we needed.

Moreover, we also think that their stores are quite accessible because they have 3 different branches to choose from. They have one in Nw Barnes, Ne Halsey st, and Powell drive.

Aside from paint, they also do window coverings such as custom blinds, shade, shutter, and drapery.

We thought this was important to note because a lot of those who buy paint are also renovating their house.

The customers we talked to said a lot of positive things, but some had negative experiences when it comes to the service. Some mentioned that the other staff members were rude and condescending.

We were thankful that our experience was the opposite, so we thought that they’d already changed their employees or improved their service.

Nevertheless, we still thought this was important to include here.

Overall, we enjoyed our experience at Powell Paint Center and wouldn’t mind recommending them to people who are looking for a store that can do their jobs fast.

4. MetroPaint

Pros

  • Relatively cheap
  • Free paint giveaways at some of their events

Cons

  • Some occasional paint durability issues
  • Limited paint color selection

If you’re looking for a cheaper option of paint, MetroPaint might be your best bet. Their paint is made of unwanted paint and then recycled.

They go through a complex and thorough color-matching process to ensure the consistency of the shades.

Because of this, the cost of their one-gallon paint is less than half the cost if you put it side by side with other brands.

We were impressed by this because paint can be quite expensive and it might not be budget-friendly for some if they need large amounts of it.

Moreover, if you have extra paint you want to get rid of, they can recycle up to 35 gallons per day. They accept paint that is labeled as “architectural coatings”.

They don’t accept paint with materials like linseed oil, paint thinners, epoxy coating, and more because these are hazardous.

When we sat down and had a chat with some of MetroPaint’s past customers, they were impressed by the cost.

They said it saved them a lot of money, so they go here especially if they’re doing big paint jobs.

Some also mentioned that there were only a few color options available, however, and that they also don’t do color matches.

We thought this was a bit unfortunate, but their pricing kind of outweighs this slight predicament.

Incidentally, a few also complained about the quality of the paint, saying it’s better to use this indoors because using it outdoors might easily show signs of wear.

We think this is not completely surprising considering the price, so this is also worth noting before you go and check out MetroPaint for yourself.

Overall, if you’re looking for something that could save you the most bucks and you’re not too concerned about the quality, here it is.

Pros

  • Can dispose of old paint
  • Large stock of paints and tools

Cons

  • Some reports of poor customer service

When we interviewed some of Dick’s Color Center’s past customers, most of them said they go here because of the wide range of selections.

This store has everything you might need, from fun colors, pastels, and bold shades to darker hues. Additionally, they have tools like brushes, trays, and more to get you started with your project.

Their huge inventory was one of the things we first noticed when we dropped by their store. They even have a sample wall, so it was easy to choose from there which colors you’d like to try.

We found the staff to be quite helpful, as did the other customers we talked to.

Moreover, we also like how accessible their store is because it’s so easy to go there.

They also have some nice extra services you might find yourself in need of after a construction project. For example, if you have some unwanted paint with you, they can help dispose of them.

We thought this was important to add because if you did a painting job before, we’re quite sure you have a few leftovers.

Chances are, you don’t know what to do with them. That’s why we appreciate that they were able to get rid of the paint we had on hand afterwards.

Another thing that their customers mentioned is the high-quality paint they sell and we agree. They’re a bit on the high-end scale, actually, so they’re quite pricey.

If you can go above and beyond when it comes to your budget, Dick’s Color Center is a great option.

When talking with their past clients, there were also a few who mentioned something we think could be improved. They said that the staff wasn’t particularly friendly or helpful.

While that wasn’t the case when we visited, we think this is also important to consider.

Overall, if you’re looking for a store that has a lot of options, Dick’s Color Center is worth checking out.
