Pros
- Specializations in macular degeneration and the retina
- Impressive credentials and educational background
- They have a large roster of ophthalmologists aside from Dr. Aderman
- Cordial staff
Cons
- Cluttered website
- No reliable online form
Dr. Aderman is a board-certified ophthalmologist named one of Portland’s top doctors in 2020 by Portland Monthly Magazine. When we met with him, it wasn’t hard to see why he’s one of the most respected practitioners in the field.
He started out with a degree in medicine from Harvard Medical School. He then proceeded with his medical internship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School and his ophthalmology residency at the University of California.
During his residency, he was one of the few students to be elected to the Society of Heed Fellows. All throughout his career, it was apparent that he was talented and thorough at what he does.
He specializes in macular degeneration and the retina. He has a background in vitreoretinal surgery, so if this is what you need, he’s very capable.
Based on our experience, not only is he well-versed in his field, but he’s also very easy to talk to. He really responds to all your questions and makes you feel at ease, which we like.
We also noticed that EyeHealth Northwest has a huge roster of ophthalmologists ready, so if you need referrals or if you want another doctor, you’ll easily find one.
You can go to them for issues regarding cataracts, LASIK, and other eye-related concerns. They’ve been serving since 1954 and are a well-respected clinic in the area because of their proven results and cordial staff.
We did notice, however, that they don’t have a reliable online form to schedule consultations and have a cluttered website. This makes it a bit hard to look through their services online.
Still, we think that they’re a reliable clinic and well worth a mention on our list.

He’s an all-around ophthalmologist; he even performs eye surgery.
Based on our poll of his previous patients and our experience, he’s very approachable and friendly. He’s also very thorough and competent, making for a stress-free consultation.
He goes over and beyond to give patients the best eye care available, he cares for his patients based on what we’ve seen.
The clinic is also very efficient. There isn’t a lot of waiting time and the staff is very thorough and friendly.
The Eye Clinic P.C. has served since 1949, so they’ve been in the business for quite some time already. Their services include fitting, diagnosis, laser treatment, and medical treatment of eye diseases.
We also like that they have a large selection of frames and specialty lenses as well. They’re a one-stop shop for all your eye needs.
We noticed that they have a contact form on their website, however, we find it a bit unreliable. It’s still best to visit the clinic directly or call them for inquiries or to set appointments, based on our experience.

Pros
- Extensive range of medical and vision services available
- Impressive medical background
- Approachable staff
- Assists you with insurance issues
Cons
- Only one doctor
- Outdated website
- Inconsistent hours
Dr. Karen Winchester opened Eye Care Northwest after working for other ophthalmology clinics. Based on our experience, we can’t help but see why she’s a respected eye doctor in Portland.
For one, she has an impressive educational background and volunteer experience. Before she was a board-certified ophthalmologist, she got her medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and did her internship at Cornell University New York Hospital.
She then did her ophthalmology residency at the University of Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary in Chicago and completed a fellowship in cornea and external disease at the University of Iowa.
She also has extensive volunteer experience doing cataract surgery in Kenya and India. She’s not just good at what she does, but she also really cares for her patients from what we’ve seen.
She’s approachable and easy to talk to. She also has an amazing ability in making you feel at ease, which we like.
We also appreciate that her clinic is equipped with medical and vision services. You can go to them if you have glaucoma, corneal conditions, cataracts, diabetic eye disease, dry eyes, macular degeneration, or traumatic eye injuries.
They also provide eye examinations, eyeglass prescriptions, and contact lens fitting, and even have a wide selection of eyeglasses you can choose from.
They’re in-network providers for many major insurance plans. We like that they can help you with your insurance if needed.
One downside, however, is if you need referrals or if you want another ophthalmologist, you don’t really have options available. You might be referred to another clinic.
They also have a pretty outdated website, making it difficult to look through their services online.
Still, we think they’re a great clinic and worthy of a spot on this list.

- His research looks into treatments for inherited retinal diseases
- Great bedside manner
- The institute is known for its strides in research on eye diseases
- Topnotch care
Cons
- Expensive
- Cluttered website
Dr. Mark Pennesi caught our eye because of his proven track record and overwhelmingly positive patient feedback. After meeting him, it wasn’t difficult to see why he’s well-respected in his field.
His main specialization is degenerative retinal disorders. As for his educational background, he completed a combined M.D./Ph.D. at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.
His thesis focused on identifying new animal models of retinal degeneration, which we found impressive. He had his internship at Scripps Mercy Hospital and his ophthalmology residency at the University of California.
He has won numerous awards during residency such as the Hogan/Garcia award for the best resident research project. He then completed an ophthalmic genetics fellowship after residency.
His research aims to develop treatments for inherited retinal diseases. So if this is what you need help with, he’s a fantastic doctor for the job.
His bedside manner is fantastic. He answers questions promptly and always aims to understand the nature of patients’ concerns.
He’s very helpful and easy to talk to. He makes sure that you know what your options are when you consult with him.
The Casey Eye Institute is also amazing, based on our experience. They’re efficient and the staff is very friendly.
The institute is well-known for its efforts toward gene therapy, informatics, community outreach programs, and especially research. All their doctors conduct research in all ophthalmology specialties and are looking into new approaches to treating common and rare eye diseases.
One of the downsides, however, is the rates can be quite expensive. So if you’re on a tight budget, it might be best to check out the other clinics on this list.
Their website is also quite cluttered, making it difficult to look through their services.
